Today was the first day of sculpting at the Fox & Hounds Pub project. The two restaurant entrance trees were the first to get the treatment. The pieces were done with fiberglass reinforced concrete over the welded steel frames covered in diamond lath.
The concrete was troweled on about an inch thick and then let to set up for about two hours.
The end result looked pretty cool and totally changed the look of the entrance.

I'll fashion a fox (who is hiding from the dogs) that will live in the tree. He will be done with Abracadabra Sculpt.

Will their be any leaves on the branches that will be visible? Just wondering if you would sculpt leaves or use plastic greenery if needed.
The trees look great even without being painted! This looks like just a little more fun than the submarine board room for Multicam. I'm sure you enjoyed them both. Can't wait to see what's next.

That's really great looking, Dan. Love the texture of the bark on the tree. Can I ask, is that "fiberglass reinforced concrete" a known product, or your own concoction? It seems to have a fairly long working time also, which is good. Very neat!

Fiberglass reinforced concrete is available as a dry mix although I have never purchased it that way. We have our own ' top secret' mix which works well for us. Basically it is sand. powder cement and a small amount of fiberglass shorts (small fibers) mixed together with water. The mix and all the techniques to do it are covered in our Sign Magic Workshop. We will go in depth at the Sculpting Magic Workshop to n=be held this fall.

I wear gloves when I apply the cement but for carving I do better without. Sometimes I get nasty burns and the tips of my fingers wear out real bad. The good thing about our skin is that it grows back real fast!

Dan - aesthetic question: Is there a reason why the 'trees' become 'rectangular' at the bottom? Is it for structural strength, or so as not to encroach on 'foot traffic' - or both? Just struck me as looking a little odd towards the floor. Not a huge deal, but was guessing that you didn't want the radius protruding into the 'walk-way.'

Floor real estate is always valuable. While I would love to do a wild root structure the reality is that people will walk here. In the restaurant there will be tables and chairs. It has t be practical and safe. So the trunks do expand towards the bottom but in a way that intrudes into the space as little as possible.

Just to think that I just spent several thousands of dollars to have my house leveled. It looked like a Sawatzky creation several weeks ago...but now it looks "right".
For those who have lots of questions about Dan's process - just go to his workshop and he reveals all his "secrets". He even lets you work on a project...which he later sells and puts the money in his pocket.
