I'm in California and have printed decals for a company that sells to cell sites. I received an email today saying some of the decals In sold them and they've applied are coming off. Usually I don't have to worry about temperature range but I was informed they were trying to apply them to metal doors at the top of Squaw Valley Ski Resort in 20 degree weather! I told them the vinyl isn't made to stick in that temperature range and they told me the last company's decals did. Is there a vinyl out there that I can print on that can actually be applied in that temperature range? If so, what is it?

I'm sure Roger will chime in. BUT. Maybe they should try applying with Rapid Tac II? It is a positioning fluid but also promotes adhesion and might work??

I seem to remember that 3M made a vinyl for cold weather application, but I can't remember the number. There is a Convex brand vinyl called Convex Cold Weather that is made for application in freezing temperatures, but I've never used it.

Clean with Rapid TacII first, then spray again, lay and position, squeegee VERY FIRMLY, spray trans tape after 90 seconds and let it soak 1 minute then remove.
Roger p.s. I have had greatest success with "premium cast films" 3-M, Arlon, Oracal, Avery

quote:I used Avery 1005 EZ. Any other suggestions?
Right there is your answer.. (Avery product Fail aside)
The 1005 is designed as wrap material. With Air release and doesn't set up in cold weather at it takes a week to reach full tack.
Nothing against Roger Rapid as I use it regularly, You don't want to use Rapid Tack on Air release products. It will trap the moisture under the vinyl which seemed to cause our failure as the properties that promote the adhesion after a time, seemed break down the glue when left on there for a long time. We learned this from first hand experience as one of my employees used Tack 1 once on some 1005 and after a week moisture was still trapped in the air channels and made a gooey mess and failed.

There has to be a cold weather vinyl that will stick in freezing temps. Whether or not it is available to us in rolls for printing or cutting may be another matter. But as an example, the little vinyl year sticker that goes on your license plate every year, sticks like crazy in any temp.
As well as Rapid Tac II works in cold temps, it might be too much of a PITA to supply Rapid Tac to his customer as it sounds like these decals could be going all over North America.

I had a minute so I called 3M tech support (800-374-6772)
The guy was very helpful. He said to use 3M vinyl number IJ35. I've never seen that number before so I asked him about it and he said it is a 3.2 mil vinyl with a special permanent adhesive that can be applied down to -59˚ F. He even looked up some distributors in California.
Interstate Electric 800-824-0099
Denco Sales 925-822-0000
Fellers 800-654-8405
Good luck.

Actually sometimes in these "customer applied films/decals" it is best to sell/supply small bottles of Rapid Tac II (4oz or32oz. size). We have many companys that do this, mainly to assure the job will be applied well by novice.
Sometimes a lot of what goes wrong can be just the way the customer cleans the substrate or they were not profecient at dry application.
Terrible to have a customer thinking its the suppliers fault, even when it wasn't.
