If you've got some hand lettering to do that requires your best control, do you need to do anything in the way of getting calm, warming up the hand, etc., or do you just walk in, pick up the brush and paint, and start lettering?

Okay, here's my secret. Just as a musician warms up before the concert, I'll pick up my brush and do a little doodle on my windshield or any other piece of glass that's next to me. If it's a certain letter or letter style, I'll even do a couple of them as well. This goes the same for pinstriping. It brings back the memory of the strokes in my hand, fingers and the brush.

Veteren SignMen would always letter the passenger side of a truck first, then the drivers side because usually the owner always seen his side and you were well "warmed up" after doing one. If you letter all the time you usually don't need a warm up, but not too many letter daily anymore.

I always warm up on a piece of plexiglas before taking it to the project. flattens the brush out and get rid of the excess paint before lettering the sign. bounce the brush on the heel on the rim of your can until brush is flooded well. then just go for it. The biggest thing I've found helps the most is enjoy it! You already know how, just do it without hesitation and enjoy it.!

I paint the passenger side first as Rich does for the same reason. The only exception is that I letter or stripe everyday so warm up is going for a walk in the woods first.
