Great fotos, but it wasnt really that dark back then. It looks like the editors have given the fotos the National Geographic treatment, saturating the colors so that they're all deep, with lots of solid black shadows. That's what passes nowadays as "powerful", I suppose.

Slide reproductions like these tend to have a certain look, including the heavy shadows- there are also some people out there that are colorizing old B/W fotos using some software that uses the greyscale to help simulate what colors might have looked like. You can see some of those colorized versions on Shorpy.com
