Does anyone have any secrets about which service to use for accepting CC via the web? Which is better, more secure, costs less and most reliable? I am about to launch a website that will collect all of its revenue from this and want to know if anyone here has any experience with this?

We use the service available through Quickbooks/Intuit. It has been easy to use, reliable and comparatively inexpensive.

I've been using Authorize.Net.

Your local bank may also offer a similar service.

Okay here's a weird one I believe might actually be true (not that anyone will do this).

I've heard the easiest and absolute safest way is to just have the person email you their CC#, or have a form on your site that emails it to you, and that is the safest thing around because cracking into a simple, single email is almost impossible. Plus an email is so innocuous looking, hackers have nothing to go by to tell them it is a cc# coming to you via the email message.

I won't name the source, but they seemed knowledgable. Thoughts???

Email would be convenient, too, but our cc processor does not want us using email. As a result, if our computer is ever stolen or compromised, no cc info is at risk because our computer has no one's cc info in it.

Hi Ed,
I have been using paypal for about a year.
It's pretty simple and works ok.

If used a lot, it should probably be set up with a separate bank account of it's own. They can freeze the account if there's a discrepency, so
setting it up on your main account could cause problems.

I use PayPal- simply generate a "Buy Now" button under Merchant Services- enter how much you want it for- it will generate two types of code- one is used to embed into a webpage, the other as simply an email link- just copy and paste this "email code" into any email- when the client clicks the link, they are immediately directed to the PayPal site to pay with Credit Card, Check or PayPal account...

I don't have to manage anybody's credit card info- it's all handled thru PayPal- once the client make a payment, I'm notified, packing invoices, shipping labels, postage, reports can all be generated from within PayPal- plus I have a debit card so I have immediate access to all funds- makes it real handy when a client pays a deposit (usually the entire amount upfront since it's with a credit card) I can then order any t-shirts or other supplies directly from that same account- almost 95% of my business is now paid this way and my book keeper is very happy...
