It's a shame, to me, that most young people have no concept of what it means "to fight and die for your country." And I don't mean that in a disparaging way; nor do I want to see anymore of our soldiers die.
Many kids today have little respect for us 'old geezers' from WWII and Korea, or even Vietnam, many of whom were also in their teens when this country asked them to go and fight for it. In Iwo Jima, for instance, we lost over 7,000 boys, in just a couple days...many who had yet to go on a first date.
Thru the years, I've met and known a good number of these guys (and a couple gals); and can honestly say that they were some of the most wonderful people I've ever known. To a person, they have been humble, honest, love God and country, and have been proud to serve.
We're losing these people at a rate of over a thousand a day....a terrible loss also. I'm proud and happy to have known those that I shared some time with, and proud of their service. I hope that many of them had a chance to tell their stories, write a book, or put something on tape or CD for posterity.
I'm also very proud of those brave folks serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are also serving in extreme conditions. God Bless you all and thank you for your service.

I don't think I could ever go through what so many great Americans have had to gone though. I had lunch the other day with these guys who had been in Veitnam. "Les" had been held prisoner, beaten by pubesent Vietnamese, and his body still bears the scars. The guy sitting next to him had also been there. He had also been shot. He remembered having barbequed water buffalo. The ones they didn't eat, they'd shoot. Less food for the enemy. Tough men!

We went riding to the sand dunes at Sand Mountain Nevada this weekend (just got home)... This morning while heading out to the mounatian out in the middle of the desert (85 mile east of Reno on Highway 50) I came up on a Police car, a couple support vehicles giving escort to a gang of bicycle riders and with them were about 6 Parapalegics on bikes... yes peddling with their hands... Up the road was another support vehicle at the entrance to the mountain.. I asked what they were doing.. he said Vets riding from San fransisco to west virginia and due to reach it by July 24th... They all got thumbs up by me... Inspiring... and made feel good for what they were doing... Good job guys and gals!!! I'm glad i got to see it.. http://www.sonomanews.com/news/article_739184a4-647d-11df-8d9f-001cc4c002e0.html
