Are there any graduates of this famous course out there? My dad had me take it when I was 17 and it really helped me out.

Some time I would like to take it again. It is a very helpful business tool. I notice it is still available.

BTDT, I took in back in '68. Helped me a whole lot. Lost my copy of Lincoln the Unknown, though, loaned it to a friend, who returned home to Kentucky. Let us know if you re-take it. Peace, Don

I took it in the late '90's. It was helpful back then and probably just as good now. I should re-read those books.

My daughter took the course about 8 years ago and it helped her greatly. She was reserved and felt awkward in business situations and it gave her confidence. Now she works for an executive search firm in Chicago and deals with and interviews CEOs everyday. She sure got her monies worth out of it.

Well the one thing I have used above all is name recognition. They teach you the value of remembering someone's name, especially when it pertains to sales.

If you can remember something about someone and their name, you'll put that person at ease when they're around you.

If a customer comes in who I haven't seen in a couple years and I remember not only their name, but maybe something else about them -- the kind of pet they have or the name of their kids, etc., they'll feel like they were important to me and it helps them trust me.

I sometimes forget to use those simple things I've learned from that course, but they are valuable and important.

The course is well worth it for anyone wanting to brush up on their people skills.

Bill allways has the most interesting posts. When he's posting, I'm reading.

I got the notion, a few years ago, to take his course "How to win friends and influence people" . As I remember it was beyond my pocketbook. So I bought the book. Good reading but the course would help put his principals into action.

Now, once again, I'm looking at joining up. If I had Bill's kind of money I'd do it for sure.

How's that for positive thinking?

I remember, (like it was yesterday),at the end of the Dale Carnegie Course when we had to get up and make our final speech. The whole course had to do with coming out of your shell and learning how to engage your audience when giving a speech. It also had a lot to do with "positive thinking."

It was 1967 and I was a first semester senior in high school and had just turned 17. The Vietnam War had by then claimed the lives of many young people -- it had turned from a few unmentioned skirmishes into a full blown and tragic war. Guys my age were constantly talking about whether or not to go and fight Communism. Some had older brothers and sisters who had been there and were home -- changed forever. The glamor of going half way around the world and kicking someone's ass had long since whither away.

So when my turn to talk came up, I figured I'd have enough emotion behind my talk to mesmerize even the sleepiest listener. I was going to talk about going off to war and maybe never coming home. That's a subject that should have been easy to pull off and pack with plenty of emotion. It should have been a situation where you could have heard a pin drop.

My mental notes were solid and when I opened my mouth it was like there was concrete in there and nothing came out. Man was it embarrassing. I looked around the room and I can almost still see the faces. Everyone was like "Come on you can do it." I finally got going and can't remember today what I said.

I finally got over it and actually enjoy giving speeches when I get a chance. Recently I have had to give some to encourage our community to have the Walldog festival we had this past summer. I feel the principals I learned during that the Dale Carnegie course helped me present my ideas in a convincing fashion.

I would encourage anyone who has a chance to take this course especially from a business standpoint. Selling our ideas is almost as valuable as producing the product. If you can't sell the project you won't have a chance to produce the kind of project you want. I think the course has helped me. I wouldn't mind doing it again.

My girlfriend's dad, her last name was Kaufman(n) taught the courses. They then moved to Naperville, IL and I saw online once that he is writing his own books, I think.

I didn't take the courses but took some others that used some of the Dale Carnegie principles. Very relevant and I think now that you mention it, it would be fascinating to take them in full!

Mr.Bill,
I never took the course but read the book some years ago . . .
We have a local radio program here where people call in to share views, usually about the politics of the city government.
More often than not, the main subject of the comments is the assinine behavior of certain council members. Most of the trouble seems to come from those who speak and act out of sheer emotion void of logic & any obvious practical reality.
I call in at least twice a year to make the following observation:
Upon entering to serve in city government there should be a mandatory requirement for every single council member and city official to read, study and be tested on two particular books:
'The Art of Debate' & "How to Win friends and Influence people'.

Of course, to those in leadership this challenge goes over like a lead balloon. God forbid they should be made aware of any obtainable skills that would expand verbal productivity which could lead to actual things being done.

In defense of our new city council president; She seems to either have read these books, or thru vastexperience, has these gifts and has been leading our city council meetings with decorum, having a firm grasp of what will and will not be tolerated. Kudos to her.

Right on, Sheila.

Our country is set up for participation in local government, and that is a good thing. The difficulty arises when strong egos go head to head and maybe, just maybe, someone would have to yield and recognize another's ideas are really the best.

What is counterproductive in government and even down to simple committee work is the fact that some people are overly sensitive when people take issue with their ideas. Sometimes ideas are bad, unorganized and off topic, but there is a way to not hurt someone's feelings when they offer up a bad idea.

Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" gives reasons for how and why you need use special skills to get people to go along with your ideas.

We use a lot of tricks in our business to win people over to our ideas and sometimes we have to work especially hard when dealing with certain customers who are difficult to persuade.

In all those Dale Carnegie Courses really make you stop and think about how to interact with your customers and others when presenting and listening to ideas. I sometimes forget the things I've learned and later I realize it. It's like, "I know better than that." Emotions sometimes take over, I guess.
