Apparently, my brother in law now knows how the design process goes. He is involving himself in the process of a guy he works with contacting me for a logo design. Apparently, his reasoning is that since the name is only 4 letters long, it should take a lot less time and be easier to design than a name with like 8 letters.
My husband told me his commentary tonight...I laughed so hard that even now, 5 hours later I can't breathe without coughing.
After 18 years doing this, I have never heard THAT one....wow...

What, is design to be sold like fruit salad by the pound? Only four letters, what a goof. When I eat at restaurants, I don't ask the waitress to lower my bill because I don't eat that much. "Gee, I can only eat 1/2 a burger and fries, so can you charge me 1/2 of the regular price"

Just tell him since its only 4 letters you can make them bigger and it will use the same amount of material as an 8 letter name. And Fonts for 4 letter names are fancier the 8 letter fonts.

However designing a logo with 4 letters can be more fun than say: ARNOLD D. SCHLEMMER, DMD, LLC, INC
dont get me started on that crap at the end of people name

I am working on a sign across the street for a pharmacy, with the name Z. The owner thought it would be cheaper to make signs if they only had one letter. lol ( serious )

Wellllllll, now let me see, the only time one or two letters might be cheaper, is when the customer wants solid GOLD! I once had a customer that wanted a quantity discount on his sign because of all the copy he wanted on it! Some people have a lot of nerve. Best to all! Don

Gee, I don't know Nikki,...Maybe he has a point there.
8 letters would take longer to design.

I spent the first ten years after leaving school in an Advertising agency as a visualiser/copywriter/artist in a concept team. They put me thru several intensive courses and of cause gained a huge amount of experience in communication.
Huge money in those days, and I only finally walked away from the third Agency because of the "rat race" of dealing with Account Excutives and Clients. Burning me out and I wanted to travel.
The experience stood me well in later life when I became a self-taught signwriter .... but never made me spell better!
Few lessons I learnt:
1: A concept/logo is worth the time and effort you put into it. Even if it is simple ...which is best.
2: The average person does not comprehend more than 5 words or illustrations at a glance. ie: Phone numbers on a billboard at 100kph are useless!
3. KISS (Keep it simple stupid)
4: IMPACT!
5: My designs and signs are WORTH WHAT I CHARGE! If you don't like the price, go somewhere else. You are wasting my time and yours!

I don't like middle men...especially ones related to me and I don't like people who have no business involving themselves in someone else's business. On both ends.
So I am communicating with the interested party only. If my BIL wants info, he can get it from them.
I'm not one to do things and brag about "Oh, I lettered that squad for so and so and did you know...." Gossip. That's what my BIL lives on and the recognition of doing something for or with someone.
This way, I can tell them to look at my website, come in and see some print examples and narrow their thought process so I don't spend forever and a day designing a $100 sign.
And get a deposit!!!

Nikki, have you ever seen that great little cartoon by Bob Parsons from Signcraft, about a customer who wants a sign, and a price is given. Then they want to omit a couple of words, and request a lower price. And again, and again.
The punchline is the signwriter quoting to the customer something like "Well, for $350, I'll let you go away and do it all by yourself..." "Great, you've got a deal - done!"
