Who is on it, and what is the verdict. I'm still having frustrating issues with X3 and the refresh (the image dissapears off the page and I have to save and reopen, and now today I corel won't open any files at all on my notebook - not even a new one) I think I'll download the X4 trial and give it a spin, but if any of you have been using it for a while I'd appreciate your opinion.

I have been using it since December (I think). I love the program. I had been using Corel 12 so it was a nice upgrade. I do find difficulty sometimes trying to get my graphics to export when I do a digital print, but I haven't figured out what that problem is yet because it only gives me issues on certain files where I will have to save it down to Corel 12 then export it.
Other than that, I am happy with it, and enjoy the upgrade from my last program.

Kelly, I'm somewhat surprised that you have been having issues with X3- it has been very stable for me and I haven't experienced any noticable bugs- (I did have one issue on one computer, but that turned out to be an installation issue, so I just reinstalled it the correct way and the issue went away.)
It sounds like more of a computer/hardware/software installation issue, but I may be wrong- I only say that because I haven't had any problems with the software. But I do understand your frustration of software not working correctly- GGRRRRRR!
I know this has been debated here just about as many times as Mac versus PC, DRAW! versus Illy, guns, religion, and "who posts better jokes: Jane or Si"- but in my experience, I only upgrade ODD numbers- so I am waiting on X5.
for the record, I started using CorelDRAW! with version 1 and have owned 2,3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12, and X3- I never bothered with 6 and 8, and I really didn't mess much with 10, 11 and 12, (but I did own them) ver. 3, 5, 7, 9 and X3 seemed to me to have the biggest upgradable features.
I can't help you with X4 advise, but I do wish you the best in getting those issues resolved so you get back to work!

I started with version 3 in '94. Version 9 in '99. Finally upgrade to X4 and have found it very stable, although at first my computer would shut down when using some commands... found out that it was my video card. Now everything works great.
It may be a Corel myth... but I've heard that odd number version are suppose to be the stable versions. Personally I think it was rumour started by Illustrater users or even worse... mac users!

Started with 3,, then 6 them.. Ive used em all since 9,, Yes there were a few challenges with each one that was fixed with a service pack.. But the odd number version deal is a myth.. I believe it started long ago because the art and fonts that came with corel didn't change but every other one in the early versions.. If I remember right even 10 and 11 had some of the same art..

Well I downloded the trial which I have crashed 3 times in 2 hours with a pretty basic file (couple of drop shadows but that's it, and furthermore when I tried to import an .eps file it said that it couldn't open it, to try the import command - which I was using...something is strange here.....I ended up opening the eps on a new document, cutting and pasting and it worked, but there is definitely something conflicting and messing up my system. I switched to windows live mail recently as well as adding Corel Painter Essentials 3.
Boy, I get grumpy when my computers don't play nice.....

Registry was cleaned 4-6 wks ago. Vista 32, dual core Athalon, 3GB ram, HP Pavillion tx2000 tablet notebook. I'll try and do a cleanup tonight and see if that helps things. I did uninstall Corel X3 before downloading the trial. I did a reboot and things seem to be running better. Maybe there was something left in the system that was fouling things. I guess I should have tried that before. The import command works properly now.

Yeah, I suspect something has been corrupted.
After uninstalling X3 and running a registry cleaner, I'd recommend going into the registry itself and remove any references to Corel. Just be sure to make a copy of the registry before doing so. Manually modifying the registry is not something I'd recommend unless you know what you're doing. Guess how I learned that little tidbit.

Tried the X4 Trial version and had problems when I was selecting fonts. Locked up several times.
I've had versions 3,4,5,7,8 10,11 and X3. X4 didn't seem like too big a leap from X3 so I rolled it back. When I upgraded to Vista, X3 still ran like a top. Check on the Corel website for updates. They're usually for compatibility issues with Vista.

Hi Kelly, I've had X4 since it was released, and there were a few bugs until the first update came out and I haven't experianced any since. There is an issue with saving and openening files but it only involves speed. Here is a daily tip from the news blog at www.unleash.com Don't know if this also affects eps files or not.
Thursday Tip: Speed Up File Operations in CorelDRAW X4 Some users of CorelDRAW X4 complain that file operations like opening and saving are much slower than in previous versions. Others don't experience these problems. I'm one of the lucky ones in that regard, but viewing a folder full of CDR files in Windows Explorer was painfully slow. After talking with some of my friends at Corel, I found a solution to the folder slowness and I think the same issue is causing the slowness when opening files.
Starting with CorelDRAW X4, the CDR file is actually a zip file in disguise. If you really want to test this, rename a copy of a CDR file with a ZIP extension and open it up in your favorite ZIP program. Of course Corel prefers you use WinZip. By using a ZIP file in disguise, this can provide a number of benefits such as larger thumbnails, thumbnails for each page, many more keywords, ratings and a lot more. The downside is that your security software (mainly anti-virus software) sees the files as ZIP files and a potential threat to the security of your system. Every time you open a file, the anti-virus software has to take a close look at the file to make sure there is nothing dangerous within.
So to speed up opening files and to make it quicker to browse folders, you need to tell your anti-virus software to not process CDR files. By doing so, you are creating the very slim possibility of being infected by a CDR file. I've never heard of one being infected and thus the reason it is a very slim chance.
This probably won't have much of an effect on saving files. Most of the slowness there is from creating thumbnails. X4 is creating a larger thumbnail than previous versions and it will also generate separate thumbnails for each page. This means documents with a higher number of pages will take significantly longer to save. As I rarely create documents with more than one or two pages, the saving issue does not affect me. Users who regularly create longer documents have been the most vocal critics of the slower speed.
Corel is certainly well aware of the situation and I'm sure they will find a way to speed things up in future versions. If you do create documents with many pages, maybe you'll want to skip CorelDRAW X4 and wait. The vast majority of you won't see any significant difference since you have a small number of pages.
I have VistaUltimate 32, clean install of X4, Had X3 from it's start date and I've not experianced any of the problems I had with X3. I use it more for Screenprinting graphics and out putting films, than I do for vinyl cutting and some of the improvements have more than justified the upgrade cost, besides, I don't know about Canada, but here, it is 100% tax deductible against the business, so why not! Just my 2cents. Robin
