Hi folks,
I'm doing a sign for a local cafe called Muddy Waters Cafe. It will be Extira with gilded HDU Letters. I remember using a technique (20 years ago) that created a rusted look on metal. I think I used vinegar. Since I'm using Extira instead of metal, the chemical reaction method is out. What have you used to replicate weathered or rusted metal? Thanks...
T.

At Sawatzky's router workshop, we used some waterbase paints from triangle coatings. (aka: sophisticated finishes)

He had a 2-part deal where an iron base coat was applied, containing real iron flakes (stir well before each use) and followed by an activator of some kind that could be used in varying degrees, to somewhat control the authentic rusting process. I'm quite sure it would work fine on extira. I'm not completely sure it was a triangle coatings product, but I think it was.

Some are using several colors of latex paint ( in the rusty metal color range)....putting on successive colors. Then sanding thru in spots to reveal other shades below. You can also use a chisel, to chip away spots. Or a piece of log chain, a bat, or board to whack it in places to give some "distress". Sponging, bagging, ragging would all have a place here. Play around.

THe paint we use is Sophisticated Finished made by Triangle Coatings. Its available in small qualtities from Michaels Craft Supplies or in larger quantities directly from Triangle Coatings ordered online.

We use it a lot with good results. We have used it beside real rusted steel and you simply can't tell the difference.

There are other brands available too but I haven't tried them.

What I use is a "rust paint" from Modern Masters in the 'Metal effects' finishes. Look them up, the stuff's great. I get it here from Canadian Signcrafters Supply.

The have rusted finishes as well as copper and bronze patina finishes in green or blueish tones... cool stuff to play with !

Sculpt Nuveau also has it. I've used the bronze, copper, and iron. They look great and you can control the amount of patina or rust.

I have a project that needs a good rust as well, how do these finishes wear outside? Can you use them on aluminum?

I got this awesome rusty look on an aluminum signature-panel I did for the Dixie meet in Laurens, SC., 2004 - you might be able to go there and see a pic of it if there is one - (it looks like a parchment scroll with a rebel flag in the middle)

I sanded the panel really well, then painted it with a fairly thin (Onshot) rust-red colour I mixed up, then I kind of randomly spattered some thinned, darker browns and such on that, then I sprayed it with mineral spirits, then I took a sheet of flat foam-packing stuff - you know it's like large flat sheets of foam-paper . . . large enough to cover the whole panel and layed it on there and pressed it with my hands and carefully pulled it up and it left this really cool spotty-'rusty' pattern . . . like white metal that had rusted over time. I repeated these steps a few times until I decided it looked rusty enough. When it dried, I took some steel-wool and sanded some areas where I was gonna letter on it, to lighten them up a bit and give depth to the darker areas.
ANY-way . . . it was fun, I liked it and that's how I'll do it every time . . . been thinkin' of findin' an old used guitar and doin' it that way. . .
