I'm replacing a hail damged illuminated face. It's part of a two sided sign and the owner wants it to match the existing face - as in faded and old. The paint used on this doesn't appear to be translucent, or perhaps it just has chalked over the years. One part of the face is black with white writing and the other is red writing with a black background. I don't have any translucent paint and because the other face has lost that quality as well as the fact that the light doesn't work in the box... Anyway - my question is can I get away with using 1-shot? I'm thinking that using a blade to hand score the mask and rolling on the red will be the best way to replicate the worn away look.

Don't roll the paint on Kelly ... spray it on! Airbrush best. You can control the translucence better. I used to set my illuminated sheets with a back light .... ie an easel facing sunlight.
If you can, use laquor base paint, even erosol cans ... I use screen inks.

I think the airbrush will be your best way to try and replicate what's there. It just looks like a very old face, faded away.
Since the light won't work, you should be able to get away with rolling the white on the background. You may want to check your whites, though. One shot lettering white is not as "white" as some background whites...and lighted signs have different whites too. Find the best match.

Back in "bad old days" we hand cut mask into back of clear acylic sheet. Sprayed and handpainted ... like working on inside of a window. Then backed it up with a sprayed white "translucent" background.
