Sometimes it gets a bit trying working for yourself, and sometimes you think,I just wish I could work for that guy and take it easier. So who would you like to work for? I have wondered what it be like about working for guys like Noel Weber, Dan Sawesky, YESCO in Vegas, TRUXIGN in Pomona, CA. Also, because it seems that when you get more than one mind on an idea, together you can come up with some great stuff.

I would like to work for Sam, I have always admired the signs in Mackinac, even before we were in the Sign Business......and now I have the pleasure of knowing the "Sign Guy" that made most of them! Plus to work in a tourist town, would just be awesome!
Also....I would like to work for Bushie! I think living in the Outback, learning his techniques would be one great time! Plus I like the wine Bushie and Sue Drink!

Working for "Grandpa Dan" would just be too much fun! There are a lot of people in this business who would be awesome to work with. I am constantly inspired by the work I see here and in Sign Craft.
I have spent the past two years working for "someone else" though not in the sign business. I was a Collision/Refinishing Instructor at WyoTech in West Sacramento and worked for BUB Enterprises here in Grass Valley designing motorcycle exhaust systems, and still doing striping on the weekends.
While those were both great experiences, I am back in my shop full time, pinstriping and lettering, which is what I really love to do. I will miss the regular paychecks and benefits, but I am now really excited about being "back in business" ! I even lettered my own vehicle ! And am going to get some t-shirts made so I can advertise myself instead of Harley-Davidson.
I feel privileged to have been able to work around, and get to know so many incredibly talented people at the Letterhead and Pinhead events I have attended over the years, especially at Rick Glawson's Conclaves.
As you said, it would be really cool to work with some of the great talents we know, but I will be content to admire their work and push myself to do new and better designs.

Shouldn't the question be ' who would you like to work with ' rather than who for. I've worked with Jeff Crank, Emmett Morelli, Mark Klein and Duke Ash in the past and have always enjoyed doing just that, working with them. I think working for other people is one reason we've started our own businesses. Being precise is one of my traits though some get peeved just at my truthfulness.
I'd like to work along side grampa Dan even though I did work for Conklin

In a way, working for someone else was easier, especially when it comes to the office-end of business. I've worked doing all kinds of things so far . . . bookstore, greenhouse, waitress, fast-food, factories, and more. I was once even a mall janitor . . . but the rewards of being self employeed far out-weigh the headaches . .
If you mean only 'who' as in signs: in sign-biz, I like workin' for myself. I have no idealistic belief that really creative, independent sign-artists would truly work well together day-in-&-day-out unless they'd know each other for years . . .
But, there's several things I would like to do, most of them I pro'ly won't live long enough to accomplish, but . . .
I would like to work for just about any kind of company (signs or no) that provides a good insurance and retirement package . . .
. . .I would like to work as a hi-tech ad designer in one of those hi-rises and go to work in dressy, artsy-fartsy clothes . . .
. . . I would Like to learn to fly a plane and have a job involving flying even if it's only just crop dusting.
. . . I would also Like to learn to operate heavy-equipment . . .
. . . I would like to weld unusual art, do highly personalized/customized-designs in burglar bars, and make mid-evil-looking wrought-iron shelves and curtain-rods with lavishley embroidered silk & velevet valances.

I wanna work with Si on a wall job! Still got a lot to learn.!!!!
Problem is, the old phart baulks at paying "apprentices" my sorta income and expenses
Spent a few days at Dan's "helping out" ... loved that. In fact everywhere I've been in the world other peoples' workshops are a gold mine of ideas and experience.
Love learning ... think a few weeks with Rod Tickle airbrushing towtrucks would fill a few gaps. !

I have worked for the big shops in the bay area during the 60's and later in the 70's when paint was used and worked with Ted Maddox, Jesse Callo, all the painters at Adway and Diamond Signs. I have worked with Mike Stevens, Mike Clines, and the big one Johnny Berg,in Peoria, IL. I would still work with Joey, Dan, Mike Meyer, TBUK, Si, Cat, Bill, Kelly, all the router folks & Jilly, Karen, Capn', and without a doubt Alicia. Pretty much though...yer all on my list. What can I say, I'm of the the buddhist nature.

Thank You Pat , but I am just a guy trying to be a "Sign Guy". A lot of years here just bluffing my way through.
Who would I want to work for? NO ONE!
But there are a heck of a lot of talented people on here that I would love to be a fly on their shoulder for as long as I want as they are doing their work.
Besides working up here means living up here. Do you really want to work where your winter main streets look like this?
Owe, there may be a car at the end of this picture, add another one and that would make it a busy winter night on the town.

I've enjoyed times working with others, but little experience being employed. Some fond moments are times working with letterhead buddies on specific projects where we all had input and liberty for expression to make the end product better than what any of us would have produced individually.
Jim Moser is one of those folks that I'd like to keep in that circle.

Sam got it just right on the head. I also would not have it any other way. sure its hard sometimes, but it is the hard that makes it so GREAT.
I know my weaknesses, I am a jerk to work with sometimes, I have strong opinions about things and about how things should be done, especially if I am the one doing them. I love to learn, but dont care much for being told what to do.
There are countless people that I, like Sam would love to stand next to and work on a project that will be bring joy and delight to all involved.
There are already too many people who can and dont, and those who can't , well they do.
Lets be those who can and who do!!

Jimmy how are you doing? Are you healthy enough to still play around with your brushes & things, or are you retired? I hope you are ok. And I hope maybe you could at least meet up at some of us at the meets & have fun with everyone.
Maybe there are some things that aren't as physically demanding that you could do.
I think I would like to work for Noel Weber or John Studden doing glasswork. Also Ian! Boy, could I learn to stripe some carriages & hand letter perfectly, as a matter fact, Arthur would be excellent to work with too!

Sam.........the picture shows the truth, but then Dennis and I could work so hard for you in the summer months that we would be able to go south in the winter..... We would have to find one of those fine southerners to hire us for the winter!
Seriously, I wouldn't have it any other way than we are at right now....... having our own shop.

Back off you chicks, I've got first dibs on those murals with Bushie next year
I've just spent a weekend playing with paint in Jeff Harveys workshop. We always come up with some cool stuff. I've also enjoyed slinging paint with Dean "Elvis" Johnstone and his faithful sidekick Bruce.
I'd like to work with paint more, it doesn't matter really who with as long as I can get in and do my thing and learn stuff as I go along. It's an added bonus if I can get along with the people I'm working with (and they with me) but I'll learn from A@#holes if I have to!
