As with other storms, the residents of Letterville turn their thoughts and attention to other heads when nature strikes.

Please check in if you are or were in the path of this powerful storm We want to know that you're OK [Smile]

Ray Shaines from League City, near Houston, moved out to relatives in Boerne, which is close to San Antonio. Got an email from him this morning and they are fine...just doesn't know if he still has a house or not.

Here in Central Texas all we received was some showers and light winds. We needed the rain.

Our house was a shelter for relatives from Baytown, not far from Galveston. They had light damage to their home, according to neighbors who rode out the storm, but nothing serious.

Our son, Mike and his wife Julie, are in Michigan on vacation and were supposed to start driving home this morning, but postponed their trip back until Monday. Ike was headed up the same path they were coming down.

The sea wall built in Galveston after the 1900 storm that killed 6,000 stood firm and probably saved a lot of damage to the city.

We're about 300 miles north of Galveston and so far, all we've gotten is a little rain (which we need). I spent some time at our relief center Thursday night but things were relatively quiet then. They had plenty of volunteers and many could work from home and man the phone lines through VOIP.

Worked all yesterday and today with a couple of hours sleep while the storm approached. Lots of damage to property and trees in Houston. 3,000,000 people without power.

I have cousins who live in Galveston. We've heard nothing but I'm fairly sure they would have packed the family up and gone to my Aunts home in Missouri. Scary stuff.

I Hope all is well for everyone concerned [Smile]

There are some 58-60k residents of Galveston. 40% ignored mandatory evac notice. 2000 rescues have been accomplished. Anybody who doesn't respect the Coast Guard and other Rescue personnel knows nothing of their day to day heroism.

While Slidell,
We first responders found too many who ignored the warnings and paid dearly. One family of four was found within their collapsed house. One other was found tangled in a tree wearing a life vest.. My team found one lost soul in a house he didn't belong in.. Some reported missing were never found..
What a shame...

Curtis, Very few fatalities have been reported. I'm hoping that stays the case, but with 24,000 people staying on a long thin strip of land the reality may soon be different.

Curtis...having been a USN trained search and rescue type, I can relate to needing to have people leave instead of being "rescued". That's too much of a burden, upon limited resources during an emergency situation.

I hope all the folks affected, both hard-heads, and rescuers, will come out of this whole thing OK.

Then you have those who stay, their place is destroyed and they still don't want to be rescued. I was laughing at this old codger I saw on the news a while ago. His house was badly damaged and water as far as you could see in all directions... the Air Force rescue chopper lowered a couple rescuers to his porch. Old fart comes out, talks and waves vehemently for a few minutes and after a little bit, back up they come without him.

Looked like he was saying... 'Get the **** off my porch, thanks!'

The remnants of Ol Ike went north of us here in Ohio but the winds on the south side battered the area. Over a million without power in Ohio. Over 16,000 in our two county area, including us since 7 last night (still not back on). I have several large diameter trees down. It blew one of the 8 foot treated wood doors off the fence around my propane tank. Trees and power lines everywhere have caused a level three emergency, no one allowed on county and township roads due to everything being down on roads. No rain like Chicago, just the wind here.

Ike came through here Sunday morning.

About the same as Dana. No rain, but lots of wind. Power went out a little after 9 Sunday morning, and they got it back on about 2:30 this afternoon. Not bad considering every substation in the county had damage, and I could see 3 places near the house where large trees were laying across the lines.

This thing had died down a bunch since making landfall, and we still had 72 MPH winds from it. That's nothing compared to what the people in Texas went through, but still pretty rough.

Just got off the phone with Gary Anderson in Bloomington, Indiana and they had high winds (70-80 MPH) with lots of trees down and no electricity. Ike doesn't seem to want to let go easily.

My area has been mainly withour power since Sunday night during the Steelers game.
We had 74MPH winds but no rain. Lots of trees down.
My power will come on for a bit then go off again for up to 12 hours. It is all supposed to be fixed by Thursday.
I feel bad for those that bore the brunt of the storm, this is just a mere inconvenience here.
Love....Jill

I don't know, Ray. The Flagship had a much stronger concrete pier foundation, and the Surge tide was about 13-15 ft. It should have faired much better.

the flagship is still there and is in what looks like good shape, lost its driveway from the seawall, i have heard reports that it has some pretty good damage inside dont know for sure. The balinese room, murdochs, the pier hooters was on,those little beach gift shops, the 61st fishing pier, the public fishing pier further west and the one on the more eastern side of the island are all gone. Seawall blvd is not in bad shape at all going east, the big landmarks like walmart, krogers, gaidos, landrys, the spot, the float, the poopdeck, rainforest cafe, island fitness, the san luis, the hotel galvez, the new convention center are all there and all intact and it wont take much to get them up and running once basic services are restored. Marios on 61st for those of you who know the area still has a standing building but has to have had water in it to some degree. Downtown/old town galveston took a harder hit, very moderate wind damage but some flooding from the bay...UTMB had water on its first floor, and the causeway going to pelican island where texas a&m galveston is was damaged but i believe the buildings are built up enuff to avoid water there. The strand has buildings and shops still intact structure wise but they had a lot of water down there,as much as 4-5ft,and much like here in nola, every kind of crap imaginable was in the water. Also downtown-ish st marys cathedral took on about 8-10ft of water. On the eastern side of the bay, bolivar, crystal beach, san leon and i cant remember teh name of the other one are pretty much gone, very few structures standing at all,and as of this morning there is a live lion running around loose on bolivar thanks to some jackass who lived there and kept it as a pet. The pics of all the horrendous debris on seawall blvd are confined to about a half mils stretch infront of what used to be murdochs, balnese etc, continuosly shown to you by a media desparate to dramatize the situation beyond what it should be. The further west you go on seawall, buildings suffered lighter damage until you get to where the seawall ends you come across a small washed out section of seawall blvd,so you would have to get wes on stewart rd and come back up. The west end is in not so bad shape at all, they did have some surge but most of the wind damage done was done by tornados it appears. The gulf side of the west end fared far better than the bay side, and that can be said for the whole island......this thing took a jog toward the eastern side of the bay when it hit putting the majority of the island on the western side of the eyewall and the winds mostly into them from the north, which pushed water from the bay into the island for hours. Between galveston and houston, from downtown south to about friendswood power, phones and internet are prett much back up and running, once you hit league city, clearlake, webster and pasadena pwer is sporadic, dickinson was out as of this afternoon and la marque and texas city were also very very sporadic. The hardest hit from this thing were areas from northeast of galveston bay like port arthur, beaumont, orange, cameron la, etc but as usual, just like katrina and gustav, the media wants maximum doom and gloom to show you so they focus on major cities. Houston/galveston is very very lucky that this thing couldnt get its act together back in the gulf and wasnt a major storm when it went thru there.

For Santo.....grand isle is f'd up bad in plain english, they lost most of the southern and eastern emergency levee they built in the week between gustav and ike and the result wasnt good. Barataria, lafitte, have just started to see water recede in the last 24hrs and they were worse for this than they were during juan in 85...hurricane juan sat on the coast for 4days,this bastards center passed 278miles to our south. Chauvin, dulac, theriot all had big water problems, and they lost part of an 8ft parish levee in chauvin and it really whipped their asses. Little Calliou was mostly underwater and houma alternated between under and not under depending on where you were, golden meadow, leeville and galliano all had major water issues naturally and port fourchon really didnt fare out too badly this time. Plaquemine is a diff story, its pretty much cut in half for the time being at ironton/myrtle grove, La23 has been underwater since last wens night/thurs morning and everything south of there was isolated and conoco phillips was taking on water from the west side of 23 but were pumping it out pretty much without a problem.... good portion of those orange and satsuma groves down there are wiped.....you may have heard most of that from your family though.

Thanks Gavin for the detailed report.

We have relatives in Lake Jackson, Pasadena, and Baytown and all are still without electricity, although they didn't receive any major damage...just some water problems.

Our county (Bell) took in about 1,200 folks and most are still here. My wife, Jeanne, is the Relief Coordinator at our church, and we were supposed to have 40 stay at our church building, but they were dispersed to other shelters and we didn't have anyone....other than relatives at our house.

I read about the lion...seems they were rescued and stayed in a church during the worst part. Lambs and a lion together. Doesn't seem like the smartest guy on the block.

No power at home,so we run the generator at night mostly. It's been mostly in the 70-80's during the day, but that's about to change and we'll see 90's again. Projected power return is next Thursday.
Gavin, thanks for the updateon the bayou country. They are getting some rough licks this year. Back to work Wednesday for another 7 day hitch.

We just received internet service last night so here's our report. With the eye passing over our home/shop located halfway between Houston and Galveston we were blessed to receive no building damage or flooding to speak of. Neighbors a couple of houses over got flooded. We received power four days after the storm but thousands in Houston are still without power. After cleaning up downed limbs and trees we are just now getting back to work.

Galveston island is a disaster. Ike was only a catagory 2 storm. A catagory 3, 4, or 5 would have been absolutely devastating.

Take a look at this site to give you an indication of what Ike delivered to our area.

Best regards to all,
Ray
