There were hundreds of vehicles in the Grand Rapids / Lansing area striped with that stuff in the late 80's Heck, I might even have some of it I bought for body shop repairs. It is made by Danau-Art Decor.

Thanks Russ and Jon.... I think I'll just go at this in a high-rez Photoshop file since it will be printed on clear.
Just thought it might be nice to be able to produce this pattern in Illustrator for manipulation purposes.
Jon - great link - I read through the entire dialogue and tried the steps outlined for illustrator which resulted in basically tracing it with Live Trace....
The results yielded imperfect, sometimes squashed looking circles..... but, hey.... it was a darn good tip to try and I didn't know you could even create that effect directly in Illy instead of Photoshop.... so it was good info nevertheless.
Rick - we produced and sold strips of verticle fades printed on clear as a TrimBrite retail product/ and ProStripe pro installer product back in the late 80's/ early 90's when I worked for Spartan (Plastics) International.
I remember that stuff!! I think the older Trans Am's and Mitsubishi Eclipses of that era came stock with a border of those dot patterns printed on clear along the beltline of the vehicles.....
ahhhh, a stroll down memory lane....LOL.

In Corel Draw you can make a small circle and a large circle, space them apart, then use the blend tool, and set the number of dots. It creates a similar effect.

If you like this, it's a vector version similar to what you are looking for and you can manipulate it to your liking. All the circles are perfect, though they may not look it in the .jpg. Let me know and I'll send it to you in whatever size you want.
(Picture would have been here if I had that figured out!)

Hey Todd, back when Adobe first created CS, they went on "tour" at a bunch of print shows. They were showing off the "new features" in Illy, some of the tricks they did were posted on their site. It's been a long time, but I remember they have a set up where you can create and object (like a circle) and drop it in the symbol window. Then select it with your "Symbol Sprayer Tool". Holding different keys like "Shift" or "Option" n' such made different sprays. You could spray small circles and at the same time it would make larger circles in the forground! It was years ago, but I remember I used this tactic to spray a cartoon of millions of "Flys" in the sky. It worked good, it might help for this effect as well. Take a look on Adobe's site, there is a video somewhere. I don't have time to find the link for you cuz I'm buzy as hell today, but look around.. it's a great effect for the once in a blue moon you'll need it.
