I've been itching to buy a small printer. Although I can't justify spending $13k on a 30",,a grand would be okay or a bit more.. I was wanting some thing to make re-prints of various small decals for our Honda 70 fetish.. also stuff for my rc helicopter canopies etc. I know nothing about printers so any links or detailed ideas would be much appreciated... thanks mucho!

I bet there are some ColorCamms to be had really, really cheap...
How about one of those Fargo printers?
There must be a pile of old didn't quite cut it printers out there somewhere...

I know absolutely nothing about printers. I just want something cheap for a start up shop. Can't afford much. I just don't want to buy some piece o' crap that actually cost more to repair and in material wasted than it would cost to just buy a more expensive entry level printer.

Actually, Larry, if I was in your position, I would seek to find a wholesaler to fit the needs you have.
This way you will be able to create a market for yourself while keeping your assets free for other needs. Create the need and then look to buy.
Using a wholesaler will also allow you to sell or market a variety of printed material so you aren't locked into one type of work.
Thermal type printers work well for some stuff while a solvent inkjet will will work better for some stuff just as an aqueous inkjet fills a niche for other stuff.
My previous post was meant as a joke. All those printers didn't quite make it for various reasons.

Gregory offers solvent, light solvent, eco-solvent or aqueous digital inkjet printing. They also offer ScotchPrints (electrostatic printing), screen printing, and grand format printing.
You can go to their printing website page and get all the info you need. Gregory offers quality work and charges a fair price. they are not the cheapest but you can be rest assured that the job will be done right.
They also sell vinyl supplies and I find that their prices are very competitive.
Hope this helps you out!

Thanks Bruce. That's a big help. Like you said I think it's better to have it printed for awhile, til I get little more established. And then I'll be more sure of what I'll need and hopefully I'll have more resources. Thanks again.

Seriously, look for a used edge system or an older VersaCamm. That is the path I would pursue in your case.

A NEW Versacam for $2900! This is a 15K printer. I smell a big scam.

Primera Color Label Printer is something I looked into for printing warning labels and product labels they have one that prints 4.25" wide for $1495.00 and one that prints 8.25" wide for $2395.00. They are made by Fargo printers. Check out their website.

Fargo printers are sublimation type printers. We looked into getting one of these printers because the price is most attractive.
While the print quality is outstanding, the longevity is not. We had sample prints "fade" while in a folder in a cabinet.
The conclusion I have reached is that there is no "cheap" printer to do what we would like.

i got an ALPS-MD-1300. $399 new. works on the same pricipal as the older ROLAND PRINTERS. RIBBONS. up to 8.5" x 11" but can panel 4 so you got 17"x22. print holds up outdoors pretty well if you "hair spray" it. its a trick to do this..but after you do it once or twice it will work. i had one on the bak window of my old van and it held up for 2-3 yrs. hard to find ribbons for but can by the ones for rolands and rewind into ALPS cartridge. DISCONTINUED PRODUCTION 5-6 yrs ago.

why dont you just send your files over to www.signs365.com and pay a small fee for your decals and be done with it. no inks, no printer, no problems. if your willing to dish out $1k for a printer your going to have $3k worth of problems.
owning a printer is not all that grand unless its cranking out prints everyday. Thats just my 2 cents. work smart dont go in debt or beg for problems
