This is something Im wishing to propose to a client.
They underwent a logo change, and had a ½inch thick dimensional logo out of clear plexi overlaid with vinyl in their front foyer. Removing it revealed an electrical outlet, and the new logo will not hide the outlet due to its design. The only logical and cost effective solution is to mount this new logo (again it is routed clear plexi with vinyl overlay on the face) on a background and mounting with standoffs in place of the old one.

What I am wondering about is illumination. Their logo is two colours, blue and red, with their text in blue beside a "brick" in red. I am proposing to mount this logo flush on a blue background the same colour as their text, and 'popping it off' by cutting the exact logo out of the background vinyl and mounting the letters and brick over the clear 'template' that results.

I was going to illuminate using LED lighting (www.permlight.com) behind the background piece, hoping for a 'halo' effect which I hope will appear both around the background panel as well as the letters themselves.

Im posting this in hopes that someone with fairy extensive experience in dimensional signage and lighting would be able to tell me 'yeah it will work' or 'what? are you crazy?'

Disclaimer: I am already a bit crazy.. but in a good way. [Wink]

Of course you're a bit crazy... what with being stuck dead center between Edmonton and Cowgary. [Smile]
We do lots of dimensional stuff, but never got into illumination.

Hey Rob,
Here is my recommendation. I would create a back panel out of aluminum or dibond, something you can route out the logo from. Then I would create push through acrylic letters for the logo. The clear acrylic lettering with the blue and red vinyl overlay.
Maybe you can paint the back panel the wall color or white? Then you can create either an florescent tube box for the logo or use LED for the back lighting.
email me if you have any questions.

Sorry its been a while since Ive visited..and I forgot to turn on the notification on this thread. Its been nuts here.

First off... even though Im from Red Deer, I was born in Edmonton, so OILERS ALL THE WAY! [Smile]

Golf Flames Golf! (decal I made for my minivan)

Now, as for this project.. the letters are already made, customer has them in hand. (manufactured somewhere else)

So, is the reason for building this lightbox because the LEDs wont illuminate enough to light up a back panel 1" thick AND the letters?

I could go with a thinner backplate, like say 5/8" or so.

Rob

Paint the outlet to match the wall.
