Cliff notes version - X3 locks up after about 2 min and everything else on the computer works fine so I can't get any work done...
The real story - I finally upgraded to X3, yeah it's taken me a long time... I get the upgrade, stick it in the new Hard Drive (the old one went belly up 1st week in July). I reinstalled my recovery disks from dell, etc.
I decided to register and try to get a PIN # so I call the registration number and get put on hold (never got to talk to a "REAL PERSON") just shuffled through the press 1,2,3 buttons. After 45 min one day and another 30 min the next day, trying the "e-mail for support" options which toss you into the knowledge base. I got fed up and decided to try the "PAID" option and in less than a minute got through to someone .
The paid helper got me a pin (no charge ) and gave me a tip (no charge ). My x3 hangs crashes in less than 2 min on my Dell and I just can't use it. Now I have to go through a stability and performance restart sequence adding 1 thing at a time to find out what is corrupting X3. To say I'm not happy with Corel is an understatement. I can get it to work on my old stand by machine so I can at least get some work done (which I'm now buying more ram for) but it's not even close to the performance of my Dell.
I suppose it doesn't help that the HD died last month, couldn't get email for a month (another story) and then getting rear ended with nasty whiplash last month too!
Sorry for the rant but has anyone else had issues with X3 locking up after 2 min? I haven't had the time to play computer geek but I in time I'll get it working...

Hey, Brian... sorry to hear of your troubles.
You say you UPGRADED to X3. What did you upgrade from? Did you completely uninstall the old program and install X3 from scratch? If you didn't, I'd try that. If not, I might still completely uninstall X3 and re-install it.
If you install X3 from scratch and it doesn't work, then you've got some other issues going on with your PC, and it's probably not Corel Corp's fault. Most likely it's left over from the hard-drive crash you suffered, and something not being quite right from that. Somehow, it seems using those recovery disks never quite puts things back exactly right, compared to manually loading an OS and drivers on a clean drive.
I have been a user of Coreldraw since version 4, and I've found X3 to be the most stable version so far. I'm running it on a HP, Gateway, Dell and a homebuilt machine, with no problems on any of them.
Good luck, hope you get it fixed and get cooled down soon!!

Brian...Jon offers good advice. I would also add this thought. What programs do you have on the Dell that are not on the "stand-by" machine? It is likely that one of those programs is causing a conflict.
Corel X3 is a very stable program for me so far.
Just curious, what OS are you running on the Dell?

You can have multiple versions of CorelDraw on one machine and they run stable as far as I am comcerned. Also did you run the updates for Corel?
And last do you think just for a second that it might not be Corel X3 but it might be DELL?

I upgraded from 12 and have completely uninstalled X3 the way the "Paid" guy told me to and reinstalled fresh with the same symptoms. I run XP Pro and have the same apps on both computers. When the hard drive crashed I purchased a brand new HD and installed it using the rescue disks from Dell. I'll do the stability diagnosis from Corel's knowledge base but it really burns me up that they never picked up the phone for about 1.5 hrs just to register and when you get on the paid line they pick up in the first minute.
I appreciate your thoughts & ideas on the issue. When I figure out what application is causing the corruption I'll certainly let you know so you can steer clear or at least be aware of it.

Corel X3 requires that you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed to run properly. If you are using the Dell recovery disks, it's possible that they are old enough not to have the SP2 updates included.
Might be worth checking...
Hope this helps. Rapid

I have x3 installed on a XP SP1 machine and it runs as good as as ever.
sounds like a registry problem somewhere.

Thanks Ray I do have the SP2 CD. I've got registry mechanic running http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/ and maybe thats it. I kinda doubt it but as I say after I crawl my way through the stability issues. In the knowledge base it talks about corrupt fonts (0 kb's) then running msconfig and disable services and startup items to find the app that is causing the issue, temp files, virtual memory options, other peripherals...
Have a great evening folks!

Not that the guys here aren't help, but there's another great bunch of Corel guys (gurus, IMO) on Cdug (corel draw users group) Cdug.com. I know the people who wrote the book post there.
clink clink...2 cents...

We had a world of problems with the Corel/Dell combination back when 8 came out. The problem was in Dell's standard video card that came with the computer. You could crash Corel just by moving the mouse across the screen-swithced to a different video card and it's run perfect ever since. Might be worth looking into...
