I have been creating some font styles for a while now. I would like to put them in the community & see how they fly. What programs would you personally suggest? I was hoping to get some tips & tricks as well?

Cliff, Russ McMullin is Letterville's new almost-world-famous font star. You might try contacting him. (I'm just trying to score a copy of his new Jack Russell font.. hehe)
Here's a post where he recently discussed a few options.... also when I did the search for this one, quite a few other threads popped up, so you could probably get quite a bit of info using the oft-neglected Search function...

Thanks Jon. There are plenty of people who know more about this subject than I do, but they don't always have much to say about it. I though I would get some good feedback on Typophile.com, but response to my questions has been fairly slow and incomplete.
I started out using Fontographer, and I know there are lots of people that swear by it. I bought it years ago, and then upgraded to the latest Mac version when I found out there was one. It's pretty easy to use and has some really nice editing features, but I didn't like how I couldn't cut and paste directly from Illustrator, and it can't generate OpenType fonts. Fontlab Studio seemed to be the standard for serious font creation so I took the plunge and upgraded again.
I was strongly tempted to get TypeTool 3, as the tools seem nearly identical to Fontlab Studio. It will do OpenType, but it's somehow less robust than Fontlab Studio in that regard. I wish I knew more about the differences.
I got a book called Learn Fontlab Fast, by Leslie Cabarga. It was written for the previous version of Fontlab Studio, but I've found it very helpful in getting up to speed. Apparently Leslie is working on a revised edition and the version I have is available in PDF only..
I've been impressed with the tools in FontLab. For all that's been said about the learning curve, it's not that hard to use. The only exception to that has been kerning. I have a few fonts complete and ready to go (including that Jack Russell font), but I haven't been able to get the kerning to work when the fonts are generated. The kerning works fine in FontLab Studio itself. Go figure. Once that obstacle is overcome, I'll be smooth sailing.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005
