Something more than a rumor is saying that oil-based paint can no longer be sold here in NY after May 15th. Whether there is an exception for what us sign types use, I don't know.
For a while, one could buy quarts, but not gallons. (Makes a lot of sense---not)
So, with all this in mind, if we have to go to using latex, will vinyl stick to a high gloss latex paint? If it won't, will one shot lettering paint stick? And if that won't, then what?
I've heard since way back that oil/enamel over latex is a no-no.
All this ban seems to be related to the VOC content of oil-based paint rather than lead content---and that was gone anyway.
Neat conundrum brought to us by the resident nannies in the NYS legislature. Makes me glad that they have been called the poster child for ineffective government---otherwise, who knows what else they might inflict on us?

Bill, after reading your post I called my friend Anthony who owns Andrews Paint Company in Haverstraw NY its in Rockland county. He told me the state deregulated oil based paints and made it very hard on manufacturers but yet they can still make it and sell it.
Andrews Paint Co. 26 W Broad St Haverstraw, NY 10927 (845) 947-0019 ask for Anthony
I used to buy their water based epoxy paint because they were an excellent quality and made it in any color I needed. I painted my complete shop floor in turquoise. Anthony's father was my contact but he retired to Florida.
You can call him mention my name and he will make any kind of oil based paint you desire and if you send him a paint sample, he will match its contents formula. Hows that for service?
Hope this helps you Bill and I'm sure it will if you call, Anthony could explain it further if you do.

That happened last year I believe here in Mass. You can't walk into True Value and buy a gallon of oil based paint but that has not stopped me from getting the paint I need from my suppliers.

Thanx Joey, for your efforts---it is appreciated.
I am not sure if this something from the legislature---as in a law--- or a regulation from the Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Either way, it's a PITA.
Have talked to two of my suppliers today, neither knows much about this. It did sound as though the hardware store can't buy oil-based from out of state for resale here, even if that state can still legally sell there. If they do they (the hardware store) are subject to a hefty fine based on the quantity sold. Whether I can buy from out of state legally for my own business is also open to question.

I was told when i was 14 years old, that oil based paint was fixin to be banned in NJ, which is right next to NY State, and that the whole country needed to get used to using latex paint.
Funny how this desire to regulate and legislate keeps popping up.
It's gotta be a lawyer thing.

Maybe we should let the Dept. of Enviomental Crap know about the "Vinyl Waste" thrown into dump sites every day. Unused, vinyl and paper just stiing there, killing baby frogs at an alarming rate. Vinyl, that takes a whole bunch of years to decompose. At least, it would throw them off track for a while.

As far as what I was told when this happened in Mass, it was all about VOC's and the only limitation was to buy oil based paints in gallons. Not to mention it only effected stores like hardware and paint stores for the buying public not sign makers.
the sky is not falling, and those that reside in states not hit by this yet, just know it's coming your way sooner or later.
I still have cabinet full of oil based enamels and get deliveries on a regular basis of what they call oil based enamels now.

Just for everyone to know, I started using water based paints many years ago after listening to Gary Anderson. Back then Deka was still available, but now I use TJ Ronan (made in NY) and they have a great selection of Aqua Cote paints. Vinyl sticks to this stuff like nobody's business. I have had a very bad time getting vinyl to stick to regular store bought acrylic paint, I don't care what brand you want to mention. In the mid nineties they all started adding something to their paint to make it easier to wash (maybe silicone?) and nothing sticks to it.
Having said all this, I still use one shot when oil based paint is better.
