I know this is a longshot, but I figure this is probably the best place to ask. Does anyone know who painted/pinstriped the car shown below? It's the Roger Penske entry for the 24 hours of Daytona which was driven by the late great Mark Donohue.
I'm not sure of the year, but I know it was late sixties. Penske alway prepared his cars in the most meticulous manner (both mechanically and aesthetically) and this car was no exception. You can see from the photo that it was lovingly pinstriped by someone of considerable talent. For all you gearheads, it's a Lola T70 Mk3B.
Any info would be appreciated.

Probably "Shakey Jake" out of L.A. There was a feature about him in AUTO ART a few months back. He was doing a lot of cars at tracks like Riverside.

I don't know who did Penske's cars, but in the 80's I striped a Penske Indy car at Watkins Glen. They put a new nose and front wing on and I had to match the striping that was on the old one. Penske used the same striping on all of his cars, from Indy cars, Trans Am Camaros to the Lola shown above. There is a 1974 Penske/Gurney Eagle on display at the Motor Sports Research Center in Watkins Glen with the same striping on it.

Just when one is entertaining thoughts of days gone by, a gem emerges........there's a good chance that is one I did in late '69 at Penske's shop located behind Reath Automotive on Cherry Blvd, in Long Beach or more accurately, Signal Hill.....style is very close to Penske's look of the time, especially movements above number pad.......depending on who was available, it could also have been Ricklets or Fineberg, even Shakey( Chuck and I used to haunt Riverside), but Jakes style was alittle different, so I don't really think it's his, looks more like what I was doing at the time.....also good chance fellow in pic is Donohue, his hair cut was legendary at the time, him and PJ did nothing but crewcuts....
(lettering was all by hand also-which included number pad)

Thanks everyone. It's definately Mark Donohue in the photo Frank, probably taken late in the race during a driver change or at the end. If you look closely you'll notice the front of the car is covered in oil spray (a hallmark of endurance races) and there's also duck tape holding together the fender in the left of the photo. If I recall correctly the car was involved in an accident during the race and wasn't a pretty sight when the checker flag fell. It was awfully beat up.

Back in those days, they used who ever was available...usually at the last minute.
In the CanAm days, I would show up Thursday morning at 8am and finish up his car and whoever wasthere. At around Noon, the calls woul;d start comming in to send Si over when he finished...I would get home about 11pm. Then on Friday, I would be adding new sponsors to various cars in the garages at Riverside Int. Raceway. At the track, my daughter who was only 9 years old then would be arranging the work and charged them whatever she could get outta them, and kept all the money.

Guilty as charged Tony. The Nostalgia Forum's one of my daily stops on the internet. One of the best sources around for info on old racing cars and the guys who had the balls to drive them faster than most mortals dared. There's even a few drivers who post there.

Paul; I well remember that car. It's from the time of the group 7 Can-Am cars when it was the Bruce and Denny show(McLaren)at Can-Am events. That was just before the era of Jim Halls "Sucker Car" driven by Jackie Stewart, and directly after Jim Clarks death in a Formulae Two car in Europe. At that time sign guys were everywhere, but many of those racers on that social level in need of painting and striping chose someone reccomended by those they reguarded as competent, or the house "painter" or "striper" from the shop they were receiving repairs for their racing damage. Having done some striping earlier on for Mark through Bill Mitchell who was Newman/Sharp's coodinator back in the days of Datsun 260Z when Turbo Calaway and Chasis Dynamics Cuneo also worked there. Also when the late Jim Patterson was there who left to manage Watkins Glen.I remember Jim as being the only guy who drank more coffee than me,and never cared how hot it was. Getting back to the subject, I recall Mitchell talking about a striper from Pennsylvania that did most on Roger and Marks stuff. He also was the guy who I believe painted Al Holbert's cars. A passing thought would be to check with Jerry Stahl (Stahl Headers, York Pa.)about Mark's race car striper because at that time Jerry was doing their exhaust headers, and I'm sure Roger and Mark had confidence in most of Jerry's judgements and I believe they were oriented to that geography then. The cars I did for Mark through Mitchell were Camaro's modified and decked out to resemble "Trans Am" vehichles for the street. If you remember, Mark was the guy who originated the Trans Am series. I remember, and still have on super 8 vidio Parnelli Jones winning the LimeRock Trans Am race back then. Don Arnow went through two or three of these street Trans Am type vehicles a year (abusive). Arnow was the Florida guy who designed the Cigarett racing boats back then. I've got a lot of mental memrobelial if anyone needs to quiz me about any kind of motor racing from Doug and Peter Revson, to who and what year was the first national champion Willys AG/S in the USA. I was the last guy to Gold Leaf the "Sugar Blues" Offy owned by Jerry Willets, a co-investor in "Motorsport Design Corp." in Ridgefield Ct. in the 1960's and 1970's along with Mac Tilton and Walt Boyd who with their employ provided race car service's to many reputable and prominet individuals of that era. Can remember lettering a few group 7 cars there. One was owned by "Bonanza's" Dan Blocker (Vinegaroon), another by James Garner, another a early formula "A" Eagle owned by Marvin Davidson and driven by "Tony Adamowicz" with a "Traco" engine and bla bla bla "Lou Sell" bla bla "John Gimbal" bla bla I lettered and striped all of Bob Sharp's race cars from his very begining with Dick Gilmartin through his venture with Newman and also made the exhaust systems for the same."Headers N Letters" was bar talk of me at that time. Still have the patterns for the "Bardhal Ferrari" and Mario Andretti's STP 1969 Indy car. If anyone heeds correct information reguarding any of the above mentiond subject, either call me at 203-838-7791 or email at john@kurtzmansigns.com Hungarians are like elephants, they never forget. 50 years ago this year I picked up a striping brush and bla bla bla. Doing "Pin-Up" striping lately. Much like pin-up girls of days gone by, my concept reveals their shape in pin striping, with faces hidden in the lines.

Paul, I visit that site everyday also! That's where I saw the Donohue photo.
John, That was a great reply!! Enjoyed it!! If you ever get down to Watkins Glen look me up! My shop is a virtual museum! This is only part of it.
Half of what you see here was in the dumpster at the Race Track. It was thrown out when NASCAR took over! Thanks to a secretary friend of mine I was able to get into the huge dumpster and save the thousands of photos that were in there. This is only a fraction of the "stuff"! I ran out of room!

My Can Am memory was working as a pit crew of an under 2 litre Rondell for Randy Zimmer out of Buffalo.
We where towing to the last race of the year at Sears Point California.
Everything he owned race part wise was stuffed into/ onto the car and trailer and we made the trip nonstop, with just the two of us using a 1985 VOLKSWAGEN RABBIT(ex race car)as the tow vehicle.
52 straight hour throught the mountains with a racecar/ trailer that weight more than the Rabbit.
3 days of racing and back home, but not before having to by tire chains to get us over the Rockies through the snow.
Jacque Villeneuve Sr. won the 5 litre title and Bertle Roos the U2 crown.
