You can use aluminum leaf if you clear over it. We have had it on our PT Cruiser for almost two years now and it still looks awesome.

You can use the Aluminum or Palladium Leaf as suggested above, or another option would be either 12kt or 13.25kt Gold Leaf. Both are "white/silver" in appearance.
Good luck with your project.

If you are used to gilding with gold leaf, use 12k white gold, and clear it with Frog Juice. White gold has a very slight yellow cast; aluminum leaf is more of a chrome color, and palladium is a bit darker, with a brownish tint.
Other folks say to clear over aluminum, but I never have - I have signs with aluminum leaf still bright after eight years outside.

talk to Arnold at Art Essential of New York, he has some super thin Japanese Aluminium leaf, that is great for gilding indivual letters.
I have a job here , I did about 3 years ago, alumin leaf over Gemini letters, no clear and looks great still. Not super close to the water but we are on the coast. wouldnt hurt to clear them i suppose.

Everything around here is in "sea air"; I would think that traffic pollution would actually tarnish more because of sulfurous fumes. It doesn't hurt to clear, as long as its a good, uv resistant clear that won't yellow and flake.
