Well, here's a topic we haven't yet covered!
My kitchen was built in the days where microwaves most likely didn't even exsist, or if they did, they just came out. There is no space avail for one. I had it on top of the frige for some time until I got tired of the high reach with hot items and have it on a small table for the time being.
I need a new one and am debating on the style that fits over top of the stove. My only holdback is the visual space you lose due to one.
I like that space! I can lean in as deep as I like to glance into pots and such. My neighbour has one over her stove and she missed the visual space as well as space for messing with very large pots. However she was in the same situation and didn't have a space for hers either. It does look nice but I can't help but feel there just isn't enough room overtop that stove of hers!
I can't afford to hack away cupboard space to accomodate one. I already house kitchen apparatus in a large armoire in the dining room to help out with the lack of the space the kitchen provides.
Oh to win one of those grand kitchen makeover contests would be wonderful! But until then, I have to come up with another plan.
Pros and cons on the above the stove deal if you have one?

We have a GE Advantium Donna and we love it!! The functions of this thing will make you forget all about losing the space. It's not just a microwave although it does have microwave. It's pricey but it's well worth it.

My friend had an over-the-stove micro until it broke down. She said that she would never get one like that again as it as very 'noisy'. Just writing in so that you would maybe check that out if you were going that way. It is something one doesn't check into in the store until they get home and install it. Now, I'm sure there are quiet types around.
How was that GE Advantium for noise, Rick?
Mine is a wall built-in one over the regular oven that is also built in. I was in a situation like you, also, in that I was wondering if I would give up that over the stove space when my micro quit on me. The old one was a big, counter-top Quazar that fit in that wall space. They don't make them that size anymore...only small counter tops and over-the-range types. My dilemma was over when my husband found a perfectly good one exactly the same for $5.00 at an auction sale...so am I'm OK for a few years.
I understand just how you feel...it's a big decision...I think. Hope it turns out for you.

Interesting. Last week I added one of these to a home Im flipping. I debated against it but went ahead anyway and found out it really did not take up that much space. It did add to the kitchen and damn I hope it adds to the sale of the home.
Go ahead and do it, youll be more pleased than disappointed, I gurantee!!! esspecially since you had it on the fridge?

We remodeled our kitchen about 6 years ago and went with an over the stove Amana. We love it and there was still enough room for a 14" cabinet above it. To me it makes more sense than taking up counter top space.

The noise is about the same as a regular microwave Bernice.

Donna, we just went through a complete kitchen remodel. We took the entire room down to the studs and rebuilt it. I gave your question a lot of thought and the main reason we didn't get one (even though we loved the previous one we had) was because then our daughter would have a harder time using it. She's 9 and often microwaves herself something to eat. I know that Cody is a few years younger than Sam and will soon be doing that. I didn't want her to be having to get on a step-stool and then be pulling down a hot dish towards her that could spill and burn her.
We ended up getting a custom cabinet with space for the microwave underneath the counter although that's certainly not the only option.
The other reason was that we decided to go with a huge passthrough cut into the wall to the dining room so that elimintated the option of the microhood.

Kimberly, how many damn iceboxes you need? I see you are ready for me to visit, plenty of Pepsi, and is that a speck of dust on floor?
To take care of my needs on this subject, I simply put it(microwave) on a roll around pantry table, worked great.......

LOL Frank...just bought a 36 pack of Pepsi and some special dog duck breast jerky so I'm ready for both of you to visit anytime!!!!
Okay smart**s...we have two fridges and one full upright freezer. Need someplace to put all this awesome food we're gonna cook now that we spent every last cent on the kitchen. Will never be able to go out to eat again! LOL
Dust? Did someone say dust on my new floor????? Yup, it's gonna show on that dark color. That's okay, I like it.
I have one of those rollaround cabinets sitting here with no home if you want to come take it Donna. I think you and Cody need a trip to CA!

It is a bit noisy but it's worth the trade off of to be able to cook with halogen lights and microwaves. How else can you cook baked potatos in 4 minutes? There's just about nothing you can't do with this thing. I'll post some pix of our kitchen after the hollerindays.

We really like our over the stove microwave. Good fan and light. Ours is a Sears Kenmore. We had another Kenmore over stove unit that was still working after over 15 years. We just figured it was time for a new one.

Now there's a cool kitchen Duncan! I like your countertop!
We have an "over the range" microwave too and I like it that way!
One thing to watch though....our new one is vertically taller than the last one...so when you're standing right at the stove you actually have to duck your head down a bit to see the knobs of the range below.
Shorter cabinets above the range will eliminate that issue.....
But we're going to tear out our entire kitchen , add an addition and redo the kitchen/dining room to make it bigger - with an island, etc - in a few years.

Kimberly did bring up a great point. Cody likes to warm up his own stuff on occasion. I guess I should upgrade to the over the stove variety when he's abit older. That will give me more time to save up more $ for when I can really afford to gut my kitchen like it truely deserves.
Duncan, is the countertop granite? And how do you like the sink under the edge? Another new fangled upgrade these days, nice!

No, no Frank that's not PB, that's PC (Pop Corn) now don't you get anything started!
Donna, The kitchen is over 15 years old, but we did a partial reno a year and a half ago. The counter tops are new, solid surface (Corian). The sink is the original one, re-mounted under the new top. Laurie has always loved the triple sink set up with the garberator in the middle one. Two other must haves are the soap dispenser and the faucet/rinser combo. Todd, I built the island when we did the reno. We love it. It is sized just right for our kitchen. Lot's of room to move around and open doors, etc. It is slightly higher than counter top height. I put in full extension shelves as the appliances stored in them are heavy and awkward. The manuals etc. are in the bin on the door. I also installed a duplex receptical on the end to plug in appliances. The Sunshine Ceiling dates the kitchen a bit, but combined with the under cabinet valence lighting, there is never a shortage of light.
Dog, not easy to do when you leave all your doors ajar, heheh...or is one shot part of some cool recipe you've got? Or maybe, you mix your paint there and that's really a paint station, which makes this post sign related...

Oh Dawg, I should've looked further, first I noticed your dogs, that's cool, but had to shield Scotty's eyes so he wouldn't see the Westie on calendar, he has a thing about westies, it stems from so many thinking he's one that his attitude towards them is narrow to say the least, good thing he didn't get a good look, told em it was just an ugly cat, he'll be fine now, wheesh, that was close...woof-woof
Good thing y'all got cool kitchens, what w/the holidays and all...

Here's a shot of our kitchen. The island is a 5' x 9' slab of granite. We had it made with a radius on one side so you can actually sit at it.

Now the big question. It always looks great when you can sit at an island. Do you actually do it? I am not certain I'd like to sit so high up myself. I was debating doing something similar if a wall could be removed for cody to eat at. Just curious how often the islands really do get used for that.
How do you like the granite? Does it resemble tile, if something is dropped it's a done deal?
posted
Yes we actually sit at the island sometimes; the bar stools are pretty comfy for short periods. Mostly when the wife is cooking and has people watching/learning (she's a chef) they can sit there and be out of the way but see all the action. We love the granite; we never have to worry about cutting it or staining it and if you're making candy you have a huge surface to pour it on. I also had her a cutting board made from the same material; I put thick felt pads under it. If you drop something on it it's pretty much toast if it's breakable but I don't think we've dropped anything on it yet. I should have cleaned off the rest of the clutter on the island; we were just about to have lunch Christmas eve.
