Does anyone else use SignWizard and what processor does your computer have? Also, what operating system are you using. I was told that SW works better with a Pentium chip because it has a better "math co-processor". [I Don t Know]

Is anyone using it with an AMD chip?
Thanks

Math co-processors were an option way back in the 486 erra if I remember a 486sx did not have a co-processor and a 486dx did come with one.

That is usually right. Modern chips have internal floating point calculators (math co procesors).

Intel has a better handling system and thus is considered by engineering groups to be the better choice. Likewise many engineering type programs are written to take advantage of Intel's systems.

The Intel chip is considered more stable with less crashing. No big deal to most of us. However when in the middle of a rendering that takes many minutes. Crashes with reboots can cause too much lost time in the course of a day.

I had the pleasure of knowing computer procurement officers at the Stennis space center and DISA. They all insisted on Intel for the engineering sections because of the floating point stability.

Just to add to this I am running an AMD Athlon chip at home and it works great I can not even remember it crashing must of been months ago. But at work I have to use a system with an Intel chip it almost has crashes daily might be just because it is a Dell system. hahaha

Now don't get me wrong I am thinking about the Intel Core 2 Extreme as my next upgrade it is supposed to be the new bleeding edge.

THERE IS A NEW SIGN WIZARD 6.0 at http://www.signwizard.com/
i have ALL AMD chips in the computers i built.
what version of SIGNWIZARD are you running?
the old SW 4 did say that what you say about co processors....and a lot of programs said same thing back in 1992-94.
with todays AMD chip running at 1-3 GIG speed compared to a 486-586...i dont belive you would see a marked diff between the programs operation on a 2 GIG AMD or a 2 GIG INTELL chip.
back then most had 4-8 MEGS of ram...cpmapred to today with most running 512 or way better....also helps processing.
i remember a computer show in sarasota...guy had an AGFA mac/scanner/printer set up(long before the printers of today)and he was selling the setup to do pictures mainly....and he was boasting about having 256 MEGS OF MEMORY(at that time 4 megs was $120.00)
WAYNE TIME TO UPGRADE THAT OLD 486SX!!!!!!!!!

Ok Joe,
That sounds pretty convincing.
Another qestion.
My plotter connects to my PC via a serial port.
Do most new plotters connect with USB?
Also, is there a USB to serial adapter so I can run this plotter off a machine which has only USP ports?
Thanks

most plotter have BOTH COMM & PARALLE(PRINTER)PORTS. USB is a COMM port type connection.
should be able to find COMM/USB adpt. i know they make a PRINTER/USB adpt also.
only computers that have no printer ports today are laptops....most desktops have the printer port.

Joe, the last several Dell desktops I've set up have ONLY USB ports... no keyboard, PS/2 mouse, printer or serial ports. About 10 USB and a network port.

Little bit of a hassle when the customer has an old parallel printer and a serial device of some kind...

Like you say, you can buy USB to Parallel convertor cables, and also USB to Serial adapters...

That's what I'm running into.
Most of dell's systems, except the Optiplex, do not have serial and parallel ports.

Thanks guys

Your other option would be to order a PCI serial or parallel card online for about 10 bucks... might be a little less likely to have errors than the adapter gizmos... we sold the adapters at the computer store and had a fairly high return rate on them.
