I have a 4'x8' double face sign to do and wanted to do it by using only one sheet of substrate. I was wondering if DiBond would work or should i just use 3/4" MDO? It will be mounted between two 4x4post with a top, bottom rail, obviously i need it to be able to hold up against the wind. Hope i explained that correctly.
Thnx in advance,

Dibond will not span 8' without support. Way too flexable. Alumalite & MDO have more substance. Your price difference between the two isn't huge, but if you want a ready made surface, go with Dibond or Alumalite. If you are painting it yourself, go with 3/4 MDO.

I would recommend against a single sheet of dibond for 32 sq feet. It's the plastic in the middle that's the problem. It's too dang pliable and will not hold up in the wind. If it has to be a single panel, mdo with well sealed edges will be the least expensive option.

There is another DiBond type substrate called Poly Metal which comes in ¼" thick. I have used it for a 4x8 and it has worked out fine. The thinner DiBond is too flexible but the thicker Poly Metal board holds up. Get those chrome sign brackets for ¼ substrates for your installation. They work great. Don't forget to use stainless steel nuts and bolts or you'll get a nice orange stain down the sign as it rusts!

I have had good results from using ¾" SignWhite from Pioneer Supply Company in Pittsburgh. It's a ready-to-go white factory-finished MDO type. Very heavy duty stuff. Make sure you insist that it is perfect both sides. Every once in awhile I'll get one that has a weird indentation or something on one side. Seal & paint the edges and you are good to go. love....jill

Like OP said, I use a lot of AlumiCore. Most of the time I use the 10mm in that situation but have used the 5mm also with no problems. Had lots of my signs come through the 130 mph Ivan and 120 mph Dennis and they didn't blow out, away or apart.

Hey Michael P. from down under, MDO stands for Medium Density Overlay. It's basically plywood with phenolic overlay sheets on both sides. This makes the surface smooth and attractive for easy painting, lettering or applying of vinyl.

3/4" is really heavy stuff and cost more than 1/2" with 4x4 post and 2x4 rails 3/4" is over kill to me unless you plan on parking a truck on top of your sign. dibond and alumalite is cool stuff but to floppy in the center for a 2 sided 4x8 if wind is a problem

Hi Michael P, I've asked the question about MDO, Dibond and Alumalite on chat in the past. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent here that I'm aware of. The Signwhite Jill mentions is apparently very different to the Signwhite here as well, although it would probably sell well if they manufactured/marketed it. DF
