We drove down to Cincinnati using our a greek speaking GPS (our Greek friends Voula and Kiriakos brought it with them). It was a riot! He downloaded North American maps onto a palm pilot. The palm was suction-cupped to the windshield. It was 'very' helpful, and I now know how to say 'left', 'right', and 'wrong-way' in Greek!

Todd...I have a Garmin E-Trex Legend. Bought it to use for the drive to Mexico last winter. I hold it on the dash with a little cell phone holder. It saved our butts several times when we were actually in Mexico. Their methods of signposting are not uniform or accurate. In Canada and the USA where roads are generally well signposted, I don't bother with it too much other than as a "toy".

Todd: I built my own from a used Police car lap top. My old eyes really appreciate the 14" monitor pointing me in the right direction. Total cost with in car inverter from {SAM's Club} $12.00, Laptop {used} $75.00. And DeLorme® GPS anttena with COMPLETE map set of the U.S and Canada $105.00 from {Circuit City}. Total investment UNDER $200.00 U.S. and it is TOTALLY PORTABLE. Goes into any car or truck with a cigarette lighter.

Todd I have a Garmin StreetPilot c330 and I love it!! it's one of those things you don't know how you ever got along with without. Some of the restaurants in it's database are bout of business (no way to avoid that) but other than that it's SWEET. It's totally intuitive and easy. I highly reccommend it.

Smart man, Laura. He thinks you're beautiful already and is admitting he needs directions when he drives you to a vacation. What a gem of a guy you got! (as for the GPS, my brother has a laptop with it installed and takes it everywhere. He claims it is awesome and won't go anywhere out of town without it; besides it does the rerouting instantly when need be; I find it fascinating about the rerouting capabilities!)

Ricky - I was looking at my neighbors C330 Garmin....and it is really cool. There is new software you can download to allow you to plug in one "via" in case you want to get from point A to point C "via" point b.
I might nab that one.... Glad you like yours too.

Todd, I'm going to rig myself one with a tablet pc. Do a search on ebay for Fujitsu Stylistic and you can find many tablet pcs with plenty of HP to run a GPS Atlas program, yet cheap enough to dedicate to the GPS.. Mount it nicely in my main vehicle but make it removable to use in the car and van.
These come with wireless keyboards and mice, so you can also use it to pull up other things you might want to store.. notes, excel, corel for mobile logo design, etc. I personally like using a track ball while mobile computing..
Also you can have a wifi card in it... if you need information about a place while travelling, pull up to your nearest free hotspot, surf the internet on your tablet, put the address in your GPS and on your way... could even get a PCMCIA cell modem for it and have internet and email capibilities almost anywhere...
SIDENOTE*** Just read that cell phone using drivers (both the regular and the hand's free variety) have a higher accident rate than people driving with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit. They researched a bunch of wrecks and also put a group of people in simulators, some sober, some drunk, some on cell phones... the people on cell phones had the highest rate of accident.. ***
Wonder how designing a logo in X3 on the way to meet a customer rates?

I'm sure they do David. I read a couple of years ago that the Brits had done a study and found that people on cell phones were 3x as likely to have a wreck as a *drunk* person. They emphasized that it was "drunk", not "drinking". All you have to do is drive to see that they were right; I narrowly avoid a wreck every week it seems caused by some idiot on a cell phone.

Funny this comes up, I've been thinking this would be perfect for my grandma. The woman takes the 1/2 hour trip to my cousin's instead of the 10 minute one cause she doesn't know the 10 minute one. I'm surprised she doesn't get lost going to the grocery store.
Anyway, I haven't looked into them yet. Can you save places as names so she can just pull up the name instead of having to find their addy? (Addresses are a nightmare here since they blew millions on 911 addressing & the vast majority are wrong).

Chris - yes, you can save "routes" with a name of your choice....the more research I've done, the more I think the Garmin C330 (Ricky has this one) is a great choice....it's on sale at Best Buy.com for $399.
A voice tells you to turn in x number of feet and if you pass the road tells you to turn around....etc. And it shows you the street to turn on at the top of the unit.
If you prefer text to speech...you can get the next model up, the C340 and it actually says, "Turn on Jefferson Street" instead of turn in "50 feet/turn now"
My neighbor has the C330 unit and they love it.
Reviews lead me away from the TomTom's....which are a little bit more anyway....because they say their maps are older/outdate - they haven't upgraded their maps in 3 years. Garmin is better at keeping current.

What's wrong with this one, other than the limitation of a cumbersome laptop: http://gpsnow.com/em.htm For occasional use it seems a good compromise.

David, that's what we have, and we love it.. really cool trip planning features etc. I'm running it on a laptop now, but like I said, I'm going to get a tablet for cheap off Ebay, so it won't be as bulky.

I'm convinced... I got an AVN 7000 in dash unit from eclipse car audio. It's kind of spendy though but it sure makes driving easier ( when you are heading to an unfamiliar destination). It does all you would ever want and then some. It has a 20 gig hard drive.. http://www.eclipse-web.com/7000index.html
