So much of the work we've done has been dream jobs... out of this world projects, sometimes of massive scale. I really can't complain. And we have some cool projects in the works too.
The project which just got cancelled was the design and fabrication of 400 heavily themed hotel rooms plus all that went with it... just imagine the scale and variety of THAT task!
Even so it wasn't the ULTIMATE dream job for me...
One project we've dreamed of doing for years but never had the opportunity to do as of yet would be a fully themed restaurant.
For many years I have filled many pages of my sketchbooks with ideas. I'm always seeking out books on retaurant design, and always keep my eyes open when we are travelling, learning what I can about the subject.
And who knows.... someday when the opportunity arises I will be ready!!!
What's your dream project??

It would be the ultimate to work on one of those tromp loi, I know it is spelled wrong, but you know what I mean. So real that people think it is real and not a painting. We have had some great examples here.

This will surprise a lot of you, but.... To design and decorate the interior of a huge non-denominational church. From the gilded marbled columns, the muted wall and ceiling murals, the ornate statues to the stained, leafed and painted windows. I love old churches, I love the feeling of utter peace and humility that emanates from them. To be able to create something with that much power to soothe and heal the human soul would be a lifetime achievement. Well you did say "dream" Dan, but I could make a real nice one......I've been building it in my mind for a very, very long time.

Dan, I've gotta go get some pictures of one we helped with, post them here. The place is amazing but I can't take credit. I did two murals in it, but the guy went all out and made it a street in Italy.
As I said in another post today - I'd sacrifice eye teeth to do a massive mural. Bigger than big, larger life, and realer than real. I'm confident my stubborness would allow me to do it, the right side of the brain is in tune - I just need someone to pay me for this big dog!

Personally, I love to do exterior mural work. The bigger the better! I'm intrigued by the long history of the craft! The good old Walldogs.
I would love to get a mural job like the one I saw out in Joe's Garage in Orange County California. It's a few 150' walls painted up with the automotive history of California. It was painted by Bill Hueg (sp). We were told it took him 14 months of painting to pull it off. Really nice work!

Kelly, been there, done that (church thing) 80 feet in the air on scaffold painting ornamental designs in the 80 or so vaults of a cathedral in Decatur, IL.
Dream job, yes. Pay Good? NO! With art work on that scale, its easy to lose one's $hirt! At the end of the project you get lots of kind words and realize you are 4 months behind on bills.
For instance, just climbing up and down the scaffold (hauling tools up, coming down to go to the bathroom) hauling more paint up, coming back down to get patterns,...then its time to stop for lunch, and .... by 4:30pm when its time to start cleaning up you only have accomplished 4 hours of real work, after spending 9 hours on the job.
But, hey its your dream....it was my nightmare!
(Oh, I remember telling everyone here the spooky stuff that went on the night I stayed very late to try to catch up my work progress...maybe you were not hanging here back when I was telling the story. Made me realize you never ever work on a project alone in the dead of night.

Well Dave - if it is any consolation..... Did you ever stop to think that your murals are probably viewed for longer and more intimately than in any other venue....talk about a captive audience

... finishing my custom truck that has been under construction for 9 years - literally. The day I bought it brand new I cut into the sucker and haven't stopped yet! I keep changing my mind on stuff.
Next dream project is another full scale, functional concept car. I want to build something that gets about 200 miles to the gallon.

Really not hi-jacking this thread, but something Dale said sparked an old memory and it seems appropriate at moment, a short story to tell Dale, be careful of what you ask for...Grey Reid, artist from NW, has a very keen eye for detail in his work and it makes for some incrediblely realistic murals. His favorite thing to do was paint his garage door at home w/something or other, one year a friend gave him a picture of him and some buds, sitting on crates, inside of garage, drinking beer...he used pic as subject of next painting of garage door...one day soon after, friend in coupe, thinking to scare the daylites out of them by sliding into shop w/wheels locked, what fun!!! Well, door WAS closed!!! So if you get really good, don't paint your garage door w/life scenes.....
OK, returning control back over...thanx

Although you Dan, have already done built all my dream projects.........
Really though what I would like to do is design and build (most of it if I could) a piece of sculpture that I would live in.
I think most dwellings are basically static in appearance as well as not having a balance point in which to derive spiritual inspiration.
Imagine if you will (and Dan,wastes no time doing just that) a bunch of underground tunnels that lead to remote rooms with no corners and then climbing a stairway to a perch that looks out in every direction as far as the eye would take you. And a nearby creek to provide sound and the canals which would bring the waters flowing through the living room. Then also a windmill or two for power and basic flow of air for cooling from a subteranean storage area to keep things fresh.
I could go on but my brain is starting to explode.

Sounds cool Jack! We are in the middle of planning our dream home which we hope to build in the next 4 years or so. As you can imagine it won't be a stock box... not hardly.
The shop was just a warmup to the main even... as close to a functional box as I could go. The barn gets built this summer and it will be hidden (literally) inside our 'mountain'.
Dream on!

Hi Dan, I have done a themed restaurant and it is a blast coming up with ideas. This restaurant was calle the Theater Bar and Grill. What is funny is the owner's name is Gary Ater. So... The..Ater put together spells Theater! Everything was designed to a movie theme which included the exterior lighted sign design, glass door lettering, menus and interior graphics.
This place had glass wall panels seperating the room into 3 areas. The glass panels were from the chair rail height to the ceiling. We installed "Movie Icons" on each panel like a director's chair, popcorn box, movie film reel, two tickets, etc. I suggested many things to the owner like this rug company that could make the entrance rug with their new logo on it. He was really fun to work with. Unfortunately, he didn't hire the best employees and the service suffered and he had to close after only a year.
Definitely one of the most enjoyable jobs I've had. The food was very good too. What a shame he couldn't make it. You would have liked his last idea....he wanted to make a metal 3D sculpture of a cameraman in the chair behind the camera that moves up and down on a hydrallic arm for the front lawn!
I hope I get to do another "themed" sign project soon. It really is fun outside the box!
Sign-cerely, Steve

I've been very lucky in this business to have done almost everything I have ever wanted to do. I would like to do a few more theme parks, museum graphics, more Disney Projects, themed retail and restaurant on a larger scale and a few more major sports venues.
The one job that has alluded me so far is working on the design for an Olympic Games. I have a few friends and former coworkers who have worked on a few and they had a blast....they also worked very hard. I also wouldn't mind some movie sign work and design too.

A friend/customer is going to be opening a Hot Dog & IceCream stand right next to his heavy equipment rental and hardware shop. He wants my help Themeing the whole thing. I'm coming up with a 8ft tall 3D cartoon hotdog right now for the main sign. Have no idea how to charge but boy is this fun...naming the food selections, sketchs for the art on the menu, ideas for packaging lables..He wants to go quirky and full tilt on everything. He has the concrete base poured and waiting for the building. Should that be quirky too...
I always wanted to try something like this, but did'nt really think I'd get the opportunity so soon.
