I want to build a website, mostly a ministry, so at this point it doesn't have to be elaborate. I found a free download that's supposed to have templates, and make it easy.
My question(s) are along these lines: what do they get out of it? I don't know much about pop-ups or spyware, but could I be subjecting myself or viewers of the website to these kinds of things? This isn't GeoCities, it's a website I'm paying for.
for any help.

Well James what is it free download called? (it's a little hard giving an opinion on an unknown quantity!)
Secondly, if you're after a free program to do website building, a lot of PC magazines have cover cds that oocasionally have older versions of perfectly working programs, and a lot of English genealogical magazines have been offering Netobjects Fusion version 6 or 7 free with the magazine. You have to pay about $8 for the mag, but you'd be hard pushed to find a better program for a novice for that price.

Mark, I should have worded it clearer, I'm paying my ISP to host a website, but they said web design is $65 per hour, however, there are free downloads on the internet. So I went and found one.
I'm just wondering ifthere are any hidden consequences to using it.

James I am not an expert on web design but I use Webceo from www.webceo.com. It is free and works great with no unwanted extras like the popups and stuff.

Try this one. http://www.tictacwebsites.com/ You can sign up and start designing a website that is great for and covers just about everything. They give you 10 days to try it out and If you like the way it is set up, you can sign up for $10.00 a month hosting and have up to 500 pages. You can even do a shopping cart and it is very complete and relatively simple to negotiate. They also have a bunch of templates to choose from.

James, the design of the site is generally your own work. It'll have a title, possibly on every page, a menu with links to other pages, and some pages with say a 'where we are', a 'contact us', and whatever else you'd like it to display 'what we do' etc, and text & pictures. It might be five pages, or one huge long page, or 25 pages, depending on what you want to say & how you want to arrange it.
You need a name, or a domain name. Either buy your own (eg www.jimmydministries.com) in which case you don't have many problems, or you find a host that lets you use a part of theirs.(eg www.jimmydministries.users.aol.com, presuming aol is your internet company, for instance)
Where popups and other annoying junk occur, is after you find yourself a host to have it stored on their server.
The cheaper ones will fund the money shortfall by having popups with advertising. The ones you pay a bit more to, will give you what you ask for- just hosting, clear of clutter.
That's my take on it, someone please correct me if I''m wrong!

Most of the freetemplates, you'll find online are fairly straight forward and easy to adapt, but you'll still need a web page editor to change the text/graphics. Microsoft word will do it it for you in a pinch, but if you want to preview the pages as you create them, Netscape Composer will do it.
Check on Download.com for other free web editing programs. Just keep an eye out as to wether they are free or limited versions. Some time out after 14-30 days and require payment to use them further.
