I haven't done a showcard in at least 15 years, but when I used to do them...it was 1Shot Art and Sign Poster Colors. Flat, opaque and fast drying.

Hi John. I'm one of those dinosaurs who used to do a lot of showcards, but most of that sort of work has been lost to digital printing. The colours I used were Pelican Tempra, and I routinely got them in Canada. Loomis & Toles, Currys, and Mercury Blueprint all carried that line here in London, so I'd expect most art supply stores would have them, or could order them in. The main reason I preferred that brand was that they were ground a lot finer than the usual "showcard" colours, and they tended to cover better in 1 coat. Also, they could be thinned down so that they worked well in the Speedball nibs. They also had a much broader colour selection, and were available in both tubes or jars.
Hope this helps you out.

I see Richart colours, at Mann Bros. in LA and Burbank... any Richart users have pros/cons?
Kimberly, we'rte headed to San Diego, mid Dec til before New Years.Big Top Goes South, bike, brushes, and hopefully, some sign visits.
Ken, we used to get Plaka from W. Germany, from Behnsens(now Loomis), all they carry now is Pelican, tiny 2 oz. jars, not very good.
Plaka was So Good! water based, dried tho, water wouldn't touch it, good outside, cards and Tyvek, a dream to letter, Lots o colours, alas, no more.

We do grocery posters every week using Rich-Art Window Paint waterbased, works perfect. Those are done on Tyvek so I don't know how carton or paper would react with waterbased paint.
Here's a couple pictures of Jean-Louis here at work, the guy have a real nice casual and he is fast. The only problem with him is that he is not working with the "right" hand!
Just kidding!!

Hey John, I would go with Rich Art paint. Are you driving south to San Diego or flying into SD? If you drive south and go down the 99, I live 8 minutes from the freeway. Let me know if you are?

John, ShoCard colors are sure getting hard to find. There is a supplier in Portland that has a great supply of Rich Art and Crown Tempera. Not near San Diego though. I think the Disney guys are using Cell paint from Mann's or Paramount, but they double coat everything.

Do you have a work permit! I just got harassed at the border because I had my work stuff in it. I was going to visit a friend and they were treating me like a criminal! OR is that just for Americans going to Canada? The situation is true, but I don't care if you have a permit, or if one is even needed to do work here in the USA. Just a heads-up. Now I can't have any work stuff in my truck if I want to go to Canada. EVER.

I've used Rich Art tempera paints for years. It flows nicely with a touch of water added sparingly. I use red sable or ox hair brushes with this paint. It's not water proof but you can use a spray fixative if its going to be exposed to any moisture. I get it from Dick Blick 800-828-4548
