An opportunity in the sign biz has opened up and I'll be driving down to Georgia this weekend.

I'm very excited about this opportunity. After talking with the shop owner the last few days, I feel this is a good time, place and situation.
The idea of wearing a tshirt and getting a tan in October sure sounds like a bonus to me (it dropped below freezing here last night) and I'm looking forward to learning new technologies and the challenges this job has to offer.

When one door closes, another one opens...
Rapid

PS: Any "head" got a spare bed or couch for Saturday night? I figured it might be cool to drop in on someone along the way, maybe somewhere around the Harrisburg, PA area. (and save a few bucks on a hotel room... [Wink] )

Thanks so much to everyone for the well wishes and the emails of hospitality.
I just got off the phone with Checkers and will be doing the pit stop there.
Thanks a ton, Brian!

78 degrees, Sonny? That I can handle. [Smile]

Cap, you know if there's any way I can make it to Mayhem, I'll be there. It was my first meet and will always be special to me. So many of you New England Letterheads have become good friends since then and I owe you all (hmm...maybe a well placed Y'ALL would have been a better choice) so much for welcoming me in to the Letterhead fold.

Gotta go pack...

quote:
maybe a well placed Y'ALL
OMG, another dam yankee somming souf, and trying to act like a Southerner.

It won't work yankee.
You gotta learnt these sayings to, if ya want a chance to be a Southerner. Aven then yer goona need ta change yer accent. Which ya cain't

Addled: Confused, disoriented, as in the case of Northern sociologists who try to make sense out of the South, "What's wrong with that Yankee? He acts right addled."

Afar: In a state of combustion. "Call the far department. That house is afar."

Ahr: What we breathe, also a unit of time made up of 60 minutes. "They should've been here about an ahr ago."

Ar: Possessive pronoun. "That's AR dawg, not yours."

Ary: Not any. "He hadn't got ary cent."

Awfullest: The worst. "That's the awfullest lie you evr told me in your life."

Bad-mouth: To disparage or derogate. "All these candidates have bad-mouthed each other so much I've about decided not to vote for any of 'em."

Baws: Your employer. "The baws may not always be right, but he's always the baws."

Best: Another baffling Southernism that is usually couched in the negative. "You best not speak to Bob about his car. He just had to spend $300 on it."

Braht: Dazzing. "Venus is a braht planet."

Fixin' to: About to. "I'm fixin' to go to the store."

Jack-leg: Self taught, especially in reference to automobile mechanics and clergy-men. "He's just a jack-leg preacher, but he sure knows how to put out the hellfire and brimstone." (jackleg,, meaning the car is on a jack leg gettin fixed)

Kerosene cat in hell with gasoline drawers on: A colorful Southern expression used as as evaluation of someone's ability to accomplish something. "He ain't got no more chance than a kerosene cat in hell with gasoline drawers on."

Retard: No longer employed. "He's retard now."

Wear out: An expression used to describe a highly-effective method of behavior modification in children. "When Ah get ahold of that boy, Ah'm gonna wear him out."

Yat: A common greeting in the Irish Channel section of New Orleans. Instead of saying "hey" in lieu of "hello" the way most Southerners do, they say, "Where yat?"

Makin Groceries. Another Nawlins term.
Going to the store and purchase food for the week,

And finally..

True Southerners know instinctively that the best gesture of solace for a neighbor who's got trouble is a plate of hot fried chicken and a big bowl of Black Eye peas. (If the trouble is a real crisis, they also know to add a large banana puddin'.)

True Southerners make friends standing in lines. We don't do "queues," we do "lines." And when we're in line, we talk to everybody.

When you hear someone say, "Well, I caught myself lookin", you know you're in the presence of a genuine southerner.

And a true Southerner knows you don't scream obscenities at little old ladies who drive 30 on the freeway like them yankees do,, you just say, "Bless her heart" and go your way.

If'n ya get caught short Ray.. C'mon by for some fried chicken, black eyed peas, and some nanner puddin'

GOD BLESS DIXIE !!!

Welcome to the one of the next best places to the Heart of Dixie Ray. [Smile]

Cu'tis has well informed you of some of the manners which fall under the umbrella of hospitality . . .

Dont forget: 'Yunder' . . . often used like this:
'it's over yonder..' when refering to anything just across the room or miles away. . . [Big Grin]

Anyway, we'll all sure'nuff have to get together for a big ol' meal . . . [Smile]

It's hard to believe that you'd subject your family to that much culture and language transition. Did you buy one of those electronic pocket translators yet? At least they still drive on the right side of the road....sometimes. You'll need help (excuse me...hep) in the restaurants too. Even the foods that are familiar have different names and you get tired og asking folks to keep repeating themselves till you figure it out. Just carry a spiral notebook and ask them to write it. Sheila and Sonny are just a phone call away and do real well as translators. Use them for that, it heps big time. When they see that "Live Free or Die" license plate it will be the envy of the south. Might have trading potential. Just as there are rotary's around Boston, they have one around Atlanta too, only it's way bigger, has lane markers, and sometimes they drive real slowly.
I think they do signs much the same as you're accustomed to, only different bugs to get in the paint.
You might stop by Timi's and bring a pocket tape recorder and get him to say a bunch of the common needs you'll experience into it. Then you could look at the counter and walk up to someone and push the button and they'll accept you immediatly.
Enjoy the love and hospitality and give it back.

oh yeh . . .

about that 78 temp . . .
and that 'beautiful' warm weather . . .

Um, you do realize, it only lasts a coupl'athree weeks a year, right . . .

Now true-nuff, the cold won't be harsh or last too long . . .

But it's that 'warm' weather that lasts a while down here . . .

I mean warm like . . . extremely humid and continous . . .

like . . . rentlentlessy mucky . . .

. . .I mean...the grass is'nt greener, but it's greener for longer

Real 'tropical, yes . . .

as in misquito-breedin'-hellishly hot-tropical. . .

. . . .

Just makin' sure you ain't got any overly-idealistic bubbles . . . [Wink]

Good Luck, Ray!
When I lived in Fla and hung around the locals, which included all southerners, I got turned on to grits and eggs. They are a real fire before you get lettering.
Forget the coats unless it's deep winter. I found that just always saying come back y'all or how ya din, y'all is mandatory. People love to be neighborly, sticking their heads in yer kitchen to see if you need or have an extra stick of butter or beer! I loved it there!

I leave the country for a week and look what happens. Are you going to be a resident of the South now or is this temporary? You are welcome to stop by here anytime.
