Hi, have a client who has sent a file that they did not convert the fonts to lines and curves. I asked them to convert it then resend, but they don't know how. Can someone let me know the steps involved? Thank you! Tim

The windows shortcut is control-shift-O, Mac is command-shift-O.
This will convert to outlines, but all the converted type will be grouped. To ungroup, if needed, you can use the Object menu and ungroup, or... The windows shortcut is control-shift-G, Mac is command-shift-G.
If I want to convert to outlines AND ungroup, I'll hold down the command and shift keys, then hit first the O and then the G. It's just a smooth, quick operation to do it that way.
Rick's answer is right. I just don't use the menu if there's a shortcut available.

Well, they sent the file, the fonts appear now (I don't get the font message) but it's still all jumbled, and it looks like it's trying to conform everything to a 8.5 x 11 size (?) I'm opening in CorelDRAW 12 and tried Flexi 7 too! Any ideas??

Opening or importing? Illustrator file import into corel. I agree with Jim. Heaven knows that if we submit something to a printer and it's not right, we sure as hell will get charged an extra setup fee.

I really don't plan on reworking their layout (which would mean installing their fonts, scanning and cleaning up their logo etc.) for a 24 x 18 coroplast sign. Just need a little help in telling them how to set up the file so that I can import it into Corel. Can't be that complicated for someone here familiar with Adobe Illustrator.

Tim: Try having them convert ALL the artwork to outlines{ including the type}. Then save it as an ai. file Then send it to you. You should be able to open an ai file easily in Corel.

Also have them send it to you in an older version of ai. Like 3.0 or so.

This is right. Except that you won't be able to "open" it. You'll import it, instead.
And by the way, Tim...the banter can get annoying when you need a problem solved right away, but it serves to bump your question back to the top again, giving you more chance that someone will see it that can help.

Have them save it as an Illustrator EPS (no thumbnail to keep the file size small) then in Corel you import it as "Postscript Interpreted"
You can import an older version of Illustrator file but I have noticed sometimes when I import Illustrator files into Corel, the paths are actually short segments between the nodes, not a continuous path. You can join the segments but it can be a waste of time depending how complex the artwork is.

the converting type to out lines is correct but my experience is that you should have the designer export the file as a legacy EPS file and as others have said a lower version 8 usually work well. then import in to corel just peachy.
some times i have been able to import a PDF( a post script file) of a vector image into corel with surprising results.
illustrator has come out with an upgrade i think CS2 and some cases i'm not able to open them and i have CS version. i think this is Adobe's way to keep us upgrading.
it was worth my time to take a graphic design class at the communitiy college in the evening to bone up on illustrator and photoshop skills. they di not teach computer skills when i was in art school. illustration was still done with a pencil and paint.

P.S. guess i should have tooken a spelling course.
