Hey folks,
I think it's time to renew some of my Lettering Quill collection and to retire some of the oldtimers (28 years for some).
Most of mine were Langknickel and they were old school. The "HPL Factor" is numbering in the tens! (Hair Per Letter)
What are the latest, greatest lettering brushes available, and where can I buy them?

I looked in the Merchants section of this site, but it was a futile attempt.

That was quick, thanks Mark.

I looked in the merchant section and was REALLY having a hard time deciphering which companies did what!

I missed Letterhead Supply completely.

Gene just reminded me of another good reason to finish our new Merchant's Page. It will have a short description of what eack vendor specialises in.

Most of the supply Merchants carry brushes. If you click on their logos or link, you can browse their on-line catalogues. Don't forget Mack Brush. They make all sorts of brushes these days.

In an ideal World, Merchant reps would see this post and respond. When we see a post like this, we automatically forward it to Merchants we think can be of assistance. We'll do that before bed Gene.

Hiya Gene,
Check out Mack's distributor page...
http://www.mackbrush.com/distributors2.htm
Towards the bottom there's Bill Beckner out of Cannonsburg, his number, according to the site, is 724-746-4585.

Havin' fun,

...Gene, have you ever tried a RED SABLE lettering quill? They're my favorite. I love the "snap" and they hardly ever lose hair.

...I recommend Q H & F too.

Steve,
I didn't want to pick on the site, but that is the first thing I noticed about the Merchants' Page when I was looking for something specific. I have looked around before, but this is the first time I was actually shopping.
I think the logos do need a description blurb to go along with them.

Thanks all,
I lean toward the Langknickel. I have always liked the feel.
I bought some LUCO, and I believe some Grumbacher, a few years ago. Not too satisfied with them. Not bad, just different ferrules and handles.

Not sure about the Mack.
I guess I'll have to see some at Jill's next month.

I'll just need to by some "emergency" brushes until then - some 6's and 8's with more than 50 hairs.

ANOTHER THING!

How do you guys/gals buy brushes without feeling them first?

I am a touchy-feely kinda guy when it comes to $20 brushes. I was always close enough to buy brushes directly from a supplier in town. Then there was a traveling lettering brush salesman who would come around after that.
Anybody have experience with brushes coming in Dead-on-Arrival? Really messed up ferrules, bent handles, pinched hair? I've seen them all, and left them for the next guy.

Do our suppliers pick them like I would?

Buying brushes from someone over the counter that doesn't use them seems risky to me. If there is someone that sells them that's a user, I'd go there first. I learned to go through a bin of quills that look the same and feel and squeeze and identify the best. What if I could have someone on the other end of the phone line doing that for me?

I have had good luck buying the Macks, I buy all odd numbers because, A. everyone wants even numbers B. I have better availability. If you buy direct from Mack, they also give a discount and know their stock well. I bought mine 8 years ago and though I have a ton of 25yr old NOS French Masters, I still use the Macks for lots of work. I am a huge fan of the Luco 6999 sables, expensive and rare, but bullet proof!

Hey! I use the brushes myself and make sure I keep quality in the store @ lazerlines and pick them as I would choose for myself. If I don't like what I receive from the distributors...I send them back.
