Mike, 'custom' at my shop means anything that I design from a customer's ruff concept, or have free reign over. It means it comes mostly (at least 90%) from, or entirley from, my imagination, and/or uses materials and techniques not usual to standard, common signage. It is something entirely unique that I personally created for that customer alone and no one else has one....
It may utilize airbrush, hand-lettering, hand-cut vinyl, a cut-out, or be a pictorial, etc. It may also incorporate a person's name, a business name or a saying, etc.
If it later becomes a repeat job, it is no longer 'custom' (to me) anymore...
If it is an existing logo/logotype or something, I do not consider it custom in anyway.

The only thing NOT custom are the rare handicap parking sign, or pick a font vinyl letters. If you mean a shop specialty, one of ours is becoming routed aluminum signs.

quote:CUSTOM adj. Made to order. Specializing in the making or selling of made-to-order goods: a custom tailor.
So pretty much everything I do is custom. My specialty is hand-painting, however, nobody seems to want this. So I just puke out vynull all day long & try to make it look unique. Love....Jill

Even though a lot of what I make is fabricated, and put together by me, if it's just some match for a business card and all I did was frame or cut a peice of aluminum for it, and made the vinyl type match the card or letterhead... I just don't call that 'custom'. I basically call that copying and enlarging, framing and installation.
It MIGHT have a custom designed frame. If I design an original unique ELEMENT of a job, I up the cost to cover that custom work.
I do have a framing method that I designed that works great and looks good, but I've done it so many times, in so many varying ways, it does'nt feel 'custom' anymore. It's old-hat.
Parking, and other such stock signs are NOT custom to me, I simply prefer to MAKE most that stuff because I can make more money fabricating higher-quality stuff than I can buying ready-made. It can fall into the area of 'customizing' if they say, "We can't order a catalogue stock sign because it does'nt say specifically what we need."
Then, I suppose I'm customizing their required copy, it just does'nt 'feel' 'custom' to me....although these signs cost the customer more than stock signs because they are individually made with better materials.
'Custom' seems to fall into another area, that being a unique style and design that a particular artist alone is able to acheive in their original works.
If I design a sign with my totally original idea and all, I call that a custom-sign job. But then, when the customer wants two or three more, or more, it's starts feeling like 'copying' an original custom peice. It may still be custom-fabricated, but I probably won't describe it as custom, I'll say this is a copy of the original custom sign.
LOL. Hey. I reckon it's a custom-made copy?
I personally like to reserve the term 'custom' for those unique, one-of-a-kind things that I'll never repeat agian.
When I think of the word 'custom' I always remember the 'custom' van craze of the 70's. Now THERE was some custom stuff. No two alike. Even though they shared the same foundational elements, someone always found a way to personalize and customize their shag carpeted, tucked-upholstery and chain steering wheels to make it entirely different from the rest.
Some wild interior colour, print or texture... and the MAIN custom item: An awesome mural, graphic, lettering, and/or custom paint-job made it a rolling vision to behold, and THEN everyone else tried to copy THAT.
'Custom' is an original one-and-only first. Everything else is just a copy...
