Hi, Me again, Sal, writing the dissertation on wall ads? as ive been doing my research i've noticed that there were HUGE amount of ad's in the US painted for tobacco related companies. Does anyone know if these companies did actually commission more painted ads than other industrys?

There probably aren't very many accurate statistics recorded from the days of wall ads. The closest you might come to this information would be to research the records kept for some of the outdoor advertising firms existing at the time. In more recent times you might consider contacting the outdoor advertising association of america to research any statistics kept by them. Another source would might possibly be Signs of the Times,a trade periodical here in the 'States for possible statistics. There are several advertising agency periodicals that commonly have published statistics for many decades.
In the recent past it was common knowledge the tobacco companies had the largest outdoor advertising budgets until this activity was stopped by legislation .
hope this helps ya!

I think you'll find there was a real surge in outdoor advertising (beyond the norm) when radio and t.v. advertising was outlawed to the tabacco industry.
It's also likely you will find that Soft drink manufactures (Mainly Coca-Cola and Pepsi)were vying for virtually every unused wall in America at one time (much the way Guiness and Murphys compete in England and Ireland) and it seemed to me a "flop" took place. As Big Tobacco left t.v. and started their great out door campaign the soft drink people left the out door market and went into our homes on t.v.
Interesting ...
