It's that time of year again between Christmas & New Years when I get a little time to reflect on things and resolve to change the things I want to in the next year.
Like every year I am resolved to do a lot more exploring this year. I want to go where I've never been before. While travelling is fun that's not what I am talking about...
I'm talking about projects in the shop.
Generally I do this by designing and bidding on some jobs which are far out of my safe zone... way out of my realm of experience. In doing so I will be constantly challenged. I will also learn to do something new.
It's important I do my homework... and perhaps even some small practice pieces (although I tend not to do this last step)
The goal of these jobs should be multi-purpose. Obviously I want to sell our customers good signs or projects. But more importantly I want to do some things for myself... to keep the creative fire lit and the excitement going.
I want to expand our portfolio with some work I and my crew enjoy doing. We want to challenge ourselves and learn new things in the process. We also want to do work which gives us the most satisfaction. Ordinary, run-of-the mill work will never give us these jollies... so we don't go there.
I also find that if I am doing this work it inspires me to think up things even wilder on the next go around... each project better than the last.
Its my resolution to do quite a number of these type of jobs this coming year. It won't happen unless I purposely design it into each of our jobs at the design board.
This route has its risks and costs of course... but the payoff is priceless.
You haven't seen NOTHIN" yet!
It's going to be a fun year!
I also challenge each of you to do the same as you can.

What a GREAT post Dan! I know what you mean; I get bored doing a double-faced sign. Of course having a franchise sign company sort of limits the requests we get for really tricked out stuff and most of the people won't pay for it, even if I suggest it, but they are fun when they do come along and I'm scratching my artistic itch by doing airbrushing in my studio upstairs. I vividly remember selling two hand-carved, gilded signs to a doctor then calling Dusty Yaxley, "Hey Dusty, when's the next carving class?" I was always biting off more than I could chew at the time but I never found anything that I couldn't do.

Dan, I'm just watching a TV show about Sasquatch sightings in BC. Can I put in an order for a large, cartoonical Bigfoot to be peeping thru the trees on Giggle Ranch? Love....Jill
