I was told that Gerber's liner is superior and that the adhesive has been modified for easier application. Having used both I think this may be so but wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Bill, 3M's electrocut is awesome...I've used it several times....3M tends to release harder from the liner than Avery....which is one of the reasons I prefer Avery...but I won't go there.
I'm not sure the difference between the two you mention, but 3M makes some good stuff....I just don't like the aggressive release characteristics.
In any event....I was involved in SPC (statistical process control) program at a major vinyl converter and can tell you that regardless the vinyl manufacturer....there is a myriad of problems and flaws that can and do happen during the manufacturing process before the finished product is in a box and sent to you.
There is NO silver bullet vinyl....over the years Avery and 3M have had proven track records, but alas, as you know....even Goliath was felled by a stone.
I have been keeping an eye on some of my very small stock of Avery and haven't seen the problems you've been mentioning - - yet - - and hope I don't have to go through what I know has been a very frustrating experience for you.
Give 3M a try....I think you'll like it....The Electrocut is some nice stuff.

I've used both and don't see any difference other than the liner. The plastic liner on the Electrocut is not an advantage to me because it slides all over the place and it's hard to keep in one place....but that's just me.
We have used only 3M High Performance for all of our work and have never had a problem.

i think it's the same product on different liners (Gerber 220 = 3M's paper liner 7725 and Gerber 225 = 3M's 7725 with synthetic liner).
the clear adhesive is more aggressive and therefore not as positionable as "controltac", 3M's 180 series of films. the aggresive properties of this film makes it ideal for cutting very small graphics and letters. it may seem easier to weed as well since it clings to the liner a little more than controltac (and much better than comply liners for small items).
3M 180 series adhesive has an opaque dark grayish color.
there is also 3M 180C, controltac with "comply" which has the weave pattern on the liner that makes application easier. the weave pattern makes channels in the adhesive that allow trapped air to flow out with proper application techniques.
my shop uses pallets and pallets of 3M (54" and 48" x 100yrd rolls, white and colors), each line of vinyls is a very good product. you want to make sure you're using the right product for the final finished product.
avery makes very nice products as well, like 3M they have a "ez" line which is similar to the comply line, only avery uses dots or bumps (methinks of ostrich skin) instead of weave for their easy application vinyls.
if your using these products in your Gerber Edge look for the "Edge Ready" label found on Gerber materials.
talk to you distributor on what products work best for your day-to-day applications.
