I have a sandblasted job coming up. Two 4'x5' HDU foam panels that wil be mounted directly to a brick wall.
I have in the past used either redwood or cedar for sandblasted and while working for another company I have used foam.
I have had some trouble finding a wood supplier that will go to the extra trouble of using individual lengths of like grain for my panels. I hate it when the boards don't match up after blasting. I think it just looks bad.
In an attempt to keep things simple I have decided to go with HDU foam for this job. No grain necessary for the look I want to achieve.
I did some comparison shopping for foam blanks. (1) 15lb 1.5" x 4'x10' panel is what I'm looking for.
Turns out the price difference between a couple different brands for what appears to be nearly the same material is about $60 bucks.
I can get one brand for about $320 a panel and the other for about $380.
My supplier with the more expensive material made a point in calling me back to let me know that his product was a better material than what he was pricing against. He said it wasn't apples and apples. I'm sure you guys understand.
He was however unable to explain to me what it was about his brand that made it superior to the other.
He's sending me some paperwork...
In the meantime I'm hoping you guys might be able to shed some light on the subject.
I would like to place the order for the material tomorrow. I don't mind going with the more expensive material if in fact it's a better product but I have no intentions of buying blindly. $60 buks is almost grocery money for the week. Nothing to sniff about with the hungry mouths I have to feed !
Thanks in advance.

I have seen some swirls in some brands of foam, Precision Board & one I can't remember off hand. The swirls could be a little harder and show in the blasting. This just an educated guess because we don't blast much foam and when we do it's Signfoam. Just curious why wouldn't you price the material before you quote the job.

I just received a call from PB, she said that it was a problem a few years ago but since has been fixed. Honestly I have not used it in a few years so that could be the case. Just wanted to clear that up.

I did price it before the quote. I used the low end price not realizing at the time that there could be a difference in product worth my concern.
It was the call from the more expensive supplier saying that his was a better material that has prompted me to inquire.

I haven't used Precision board for a while so it may be better now. In the past it was too porous and took a lot of time to prime and fill. I have been using SIGN FOAM 3 and love it. It is made by Sign Arts.
I have tried some other brands, EVERWOOD, and some other brand I can't recall right now.
SF3 is the best I have seen. (edited for brain fart)
