Can it be done? And if so does it require a special paint or is sanding and primer paint ok? Have been wanting to do my backsplash in my kitchen and don't want to go through all the agg of tearing it down. Any advise appreciated.

Hi Camille,
Yes it can be done. The tiles have to be etched first to provide a key. You can buy special etch paint but in the UK we use ESP which is an off the shelf paint preparation solution. Check out Home Depot and see what they have in terms of Primers if not try a trade paint supply place.

In the UK I have always used an oil based Alkyd paint on tiles. I'm not sure that latex will work.
It's quite difficult to paint as the surface is so smooth it's easy to get runs.

A word of warning, even with the etch, it is not a really hardwearing surface and it will probably scratch off over time.

Failing that, if there is enough room you could tile over the existing tiles. I have always been told that a tiled surface is the best surface to tile on!!

Hope this helps a little bit
Barb

You may not get very far very quick if you just sand the tiles, but sandblasting or even using a Paasche Air Eraser works pretty quickly on the tile glaze. Once you get the glaze abbraded you can paint to your heart's content, but it's still not going to be as durable/wearable/easy to clean as the tiles originally were... but Yes it can be done.

iam also a potter. and to get a tiles that will last and be durable you need to fire the designs into the glazes. i have a couple friends in western pa.(iam from their)uniontown to be exact that does this type of work. she paints the tiles with ceramic glazes and also makes the pieces of tile look like a mozaic then fires them in a kiln. beautiful but expensive, and time intensive.
