UGH...this is a pain in my @$$!

Can any of you out there in California help? Approximately, what kind of cost should I expect for a part time minimum wage employee? I want to hire someone but am finding it very difficult.

Is State Fund my best bet?

Any info. is appreciated.

Thanks.

Vipul,if you have never had workmans comp, you will find that no one will write coverage for you other than the State Fund.

You will not be pleased to hear that the premium bottoms out around $600 a year, even if the work is a few hundred hours a year..

I went through this last year when a non-profit with which I am associated took on its first employee. Fortunately for us, we had a volunteer who is an insurance professional who did all the legwork. Our premium for a half time administrator was about $575.

I would say, first, call the State Fund to hear the story directly. http://www.scif.com/location/location.asp

Then see if you can find a temporary employment service that will hire your "employee" and rent to you with all the overhead paid. Expect to pay 20% to 30% above the base salary for this service.

It's tough being an employer in California, especially when you only have one employee. Vic G

Yep... thats the hardest thing about wanting to move out of the house into a location...

You have to pay the rent... and have at least 1 employee, so that someone is always available to handle the walk-ins

I figure that I'd need to bring in an extra $5000/mo in order to break even...if I'm pulling in that kind of skrilla I'd like to keep it.

I think we're paying only $17 per hundred.

Problem is that you pay the same rate for ten full time employees as you do for a part timer.

There are a couple different categories though. If you want someone that won't be near paint, ladders, or tools, you might get an office worker's rate.
