I have been interesting in gold guilding for a long time but lack the talent and time to pursue. My hobby is restoring the old mahogany speed boats, i.e. Chris Craft's. We are finishing up a 1939 model and I am in desperate need of finding someone who could do the name on the transom. I checked into the 22k gold vinyl but you can not varnish over it. I have played with the stuff over the years and the popular book by Smith but it is just over my head. Anyone out there close to Oklahoma City??????????
Looking forward to any suggestions.
Thx

Don, I'm not in your neighborhood but I work in a pretty good neighborhood for wood boats. Here in Hessel, Michigan every summer for the past 27 years is one of the countries best antique wooden boat shows and I am privileged to letter many winners. I do work for Jim Mertaugh whose father had the very first Chris Craft dealership and Tassier Boat Works as well as the many private owners here in the Les Cheneaux Islands. Well anyway if I can be of any help let me know. Also if you want to attend the show it is the second Saturday of August and we can make up the guest camp out back. By the way send me your postal address and I'll send a poster for your wall. John Grenier

If you can hand letter you can gild...there are no deep secrets to gilding...just putting in the time to achieve a few practice panels and soon you too will be putting it down like everyone else.
A trip to Fred's shop would be a good place to get all the info you need and he's in "your back yard" (OKC). Don't miss next years meet at Freds ...you'll get more info than you want in 3 short days.
Feel free to contact me if I can help!

Thanks to all who responded. I will call Joe in Norman today and arrange a visit. I really would like to learn and it sounds like the information is out there I just did not know where to go. I'll post updates on the work we are doing on this boat and pics if possible.
