Hi Hedz.
I stopped whining & got a new printer, an HP Deskjet 5150. Installed it last night & it worked like a charm.

BUT
This morning I go out to print...and I can't open anything else! Especially not my Gerber sign program. Just the control panel for my computer. No desktop icons will work.

Thinking it might be a memory issue, I have uninstalled everything...Corel, etc. And the old HP Printer.

I am running a 1998 Dell Dimension XPS 266 with a Pentium II processor. In the settings, (device manager) there is a ! on 1 omega parallel port zip interface. Is that where my old printer plugged in?

In Performance it sez system resources 80% free
32 bit file & virtual memory. I used to have a SCSI scanner that died long ago. I uninstalled the SCSI stuff but it reinstalled intself.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I hope I have given enuff info. I know my system is old & outdated...just like me.

Please help if you can...I am trying my best to be positive this week. Love...JILL [Wink]

1 omega is IOMEGA ZIP drive. Sounds like your zip drive drivers are mesed up. Do you have a ZIP drive?

For those who do not know....
Uninstalling and reinstallign does not reset anything. Only sometimes will reinstalling will reset a missing association in a corrupted file. Uninstalling does not remove the program and its settings unless you completly remove it from your machine and then clean the registry.

Jilll JIll Jill, slow down girl before you delete yourself into a bigger hole.

Curtis is correct, Iomega parallel zip interface will have a ! if it is not plugged into the parallel port, and yes that is most likely where your old printer was.

it doesnt sound like an easy fix, so it will take time and asking questions, did you mess with that sound card like you were talking about last night? [Eek!]

Call Advantage Sign Supply @ 800-522-3698 X 3
They are the bomb when it comes to software issues. They also promote Dell stuff, and are knowledgeable of them.

Hi Bob-O...
No, I did not mess with the sound card. I could never get my tower apart so I figured it would be best not to mess with it.
Years ago I used a portable zip-drive that the Butler County Historical Society loaned me for a project. Could that be what's showing up?
And as for Advantage Sign Supply, Rick...that's where I bought my system from originally. The man who was supposed to train me about Composer could not install my printer. He spent 3 days messing with it and it even had to be sent back to Advantage. I taught MYSELF Composer.
The busted printer screwed into the back of my tower thru the Graphix Advantage 6.2 Select little do-hickey. I think this mught be the problem. Seems my sign program was running thru the printer cable via my old printer.
Should I just reinstall the old printer like it was? Help!
Thanks.
Love...JILL

Jill,

Did you have the printer attached to the dongle or the dongle attached to the printer?

well looks like you got it, while i was preparing this

First
Stop panicking. It won't help
Second ,, Stop all guessing, that wont help either

Next. That IOMEGA driver for the ZIP drive may be interfering with everything else. Its looking for the ZIP drive and u have no ZIP DRIVE. goto Control Panel/remove programs and look for it in the list. IF you find it remove it, It should have soemthing with the word IOMEGA in it..

after that .. don't do any thing else untill after you reboot. One step at a time to get each obvious thing taken care of..

Jill
Word of warning about printers passing through security keys. I have AnaGraph DesignArt Pro and when I installed my HP printer, the key got ruined. The folks at Ana said that the talk back feature in the printer must be disabled to prevent damage to the key. I've since added additional parallel ports so nothing has to plug into the key.
