Im just curious what different Methods People use to seal the edges of MDO or other Substrates. I use anything from Bondo on multi layered signs to DAP Painters caulk for Cheapy MDO signs. And a Superglue/Baking soda formula for filling holes in HDU or Resin.(Fill the hole with Baking soda then put a drop of superglue on it and youll see a puff of smoke and walla a nice hard filled hole. Sand smooth and your done 20 seconds)
What other tricks or formulas have you come up with.

I use Rob Larkham's technique for the edges. Paint on Titebond II lightly sand and paint one more coat of glue. Really smooth and holds up well. Use a foam brush.

I use Elmer's Squeeze n' Caulk, applied liberally with my finger. It's a little messy, but the stuff sticks like snot to a baby blanket. I prime over it with Jay -- no failures yet! I like the Titebond idea . Doesn't sound nearly as messy. TR

I use interior/exterior wood filler...sand the edges (splinters) thumb over the edges. Sand and prime/paint...makes a smooth paintable edge

Although it has been referred to my method many times on this board I can't take credit for it. The Titebond 2 method was passed down to me from a sign guy named Doug Miller who helped get me started in the biz. It has always worked great for me and I have had no failures to date. The best thing about this method is you can be top coating you board in minutes as the glue cures very fast. Good luck!

Before I go to Home Depot? anybody in Canada use this Titebond ll? if so, where do you get it. Sounds like bulletproof.

we have switched to Tite Bond II thanks to Rob's willingness to share. I love it and it works well. We used to use Elmers Exterior wood filler but since they changed the formula we have had many failures. So far none with the tite bond II.

Yes John, Home depot should have it as well. Its quite common among builders and such, and I have found it in just about any building center or hardware store when I need some.
If its an edge I want to seal absolutely bullet-proof, I will mix up a small batch of epoxy. First coat has fumed silica added to thicken to a paste to fill voids, then second coat is straight epoxy mix to completely seal the edges. A light sanding between the coats makes for a real smooth edge.

I defently going to try the Titebond idea on my next sign.. Sound so much easier then my messy Caulk. I only have a Gallon of TB here I think that should be enough. Thanks For sharing.

West Systems Epoxy with Microfibers does the trick for the best weathering characteristics. The Microfibers make a paste that fills the voids. You get two steps in one application-filling and sealing.

John, it is a two part from Industrial Formulators, and comes in several speeds, from 24 hour down to 5 minute. The Silica thickener adds body to it so you can fill with it, sounds much like wests microfibers. I get it from any Home hardware or building supply here on the coast. You should have no problems finding it.
Also, if you do want Wests, I'm sure I saw it at Lee Valley Tools on that trip into town when I saw you. I love that place, and I got all my chisel sharpening stuff there as recommended by Pat Welter at the Nanaimo meet. And I still gots all my fingers!

I use LePages WeatherGrip Exterior Wood Glue for edges, also for coating Medex. I usually thin it out a little with water and put on a couple of coats, sand then prime and paint as usual. LePages is readily available in most hardware stores in Canada.
