2 man shop here.

OSHA just happened to drop by for an inspection today.

Only problems we had:

Electrical socket with missing cover.

Shop wiring covered with electrical tape in remodeling area inadequate.

No MSDS sheets for paint.

No biggie, we can fix these problems easily.

Aparently they're just going down the list checking everybody... so

heads up.

Do you keep all your oil based paints in a fire proof metal cabinet? I've heard they can make you do that and those don't come cheap.

Also, anyone know what the rule is for fire extinguishers? Is it a certain number based on square feet? At each exit? Room?

I'm putting up a new sign on the highway which will definatly draw OSHA attention.

How much time did they give you to fix everything? No big fines I take it.

I need the MSD sheets. All of my spray paint, thinners and oil-based paint are in metal cabinets. The fire dept. has to inspect all commercial locations for about $100.00 here & you need to have before you get your location approved. I have 4 fire extinguisers for 2,000 sq ft

You may want to get some for your home, I was just involved in a fire in an attic at a freinds neighbors house. The heat exchange unit caught on fire & the lady was running down the street trying to find one!

Let us know what your fine will be. It will come in the mail. I didn't have a ground fault on my extension cord at the Galleria Mall in Buffalo...........$850.00. Got a lawyer and they reduced it to $450.00.
They do not tell of a fine at the time they are there, it comes certified mail so they do not have to deal with you! I went back to a one man shop after that, as a one man shop is not open to OSHA rules. I was like you, one employee. It opened up a mess!!

I'm curious whether you get a fine first off...let us know (but I hope you don't!).

Only reason I am curious is that USUALLY around here they are fairly unaggressive when they make their initial visit, unless you treat the Inspector like a turd or you have some REAL flagrant violations (Ashtray in the paint booth, etc.). Normally they give you three days to two weeks to align yourself.

Actually the other way to get them to descend on you like Rottweilers on a pizza is to have someone get hurt at your shop. I'd rather have the Mafia after me than the OHSA people.

I treated them with respect as this was my first encounter with OSHA and I figured just this one problem was no big deal. I even sent my man to an electric shop and fixed the problem while they were still there!!!

Sorry to say, I am thinking fine as well. They never let you off for a violation. [Mad]
