I've been using Oracal Series 651 Vinyl and the cheapest application tape my supplier had ($22 for 14" X 100yd)- when peeling the back off the vinyl it doesn't seem to want to stick. So I recently tried TransferRite application tape $29 for same size as above with the same results. Any ideas what the problem is?

Excessive humidity can cause that. Try burnishing the vinyl from the liner side before removing the liner.

I find if you turn lettering and masking face down, then peel backing upwards it will come off easier. Only snag here is that foreign can stick to lettering easier if you are not careful

I recently had the same problem with the same vinyl. I always attributed it to the vinyl being very old.

Drives me nuts trying to get the vinyl to release. I too usually end up placing it upside down and carefully pulling the backing paper off.

Hope you didnt buy a 50 yard roll. Thats a lot of aggrivation.

Its not the film. Its the ratio of silicone to clay in the carrier itself. It happens every once in a while and may be limited to the original 54"x1,500 ft original carrier.
Once in a while some idiot on the formulation line gets too much clay in the carrier formula, ergo............ hard release.

She's home again now. The pain clinic didn't work, but we didn't expect it to anyway. Bone erosion and nerve damage is simply too much, so we wait. And if we get tired of waiting.......................... we'll wait some more.

Camille, Rtape makes a tape especially for Oracal vinyl, or at least thats what my supplier told me. [Smile]
I had the same problems at times until I started using this tape. Ask your supplier about it.

Hi,
We use a lot of Oracal 651, probably about 100 yds. a week, and we use TransferRight 6592 hi tack transfer tape with no release problems that I can remember. It could be the paper as Pierre says as we have run into that problem with another brand of vinyl.

Ok how about a update on Oracal 651. I have not used it in about 2 yrs, so do you still have problems with it and the tape. Yes I know it is a old topic but wanted a update.

Thanks

I did a large window job about a month ago using 3M matallic gold with Transferite med tack and had a terrible time getting it to release.

It was also about 90, and miserably humid that day as I remember.

Dang John, you must have dug deep for this one. Nearly a year later, and here we are again. [Razz]

I've used Oracal 651, work in a sometimes very humid environment and seldom have problems with the vinyl not sticking to the transfer tape. I use high tack, whatever house brand my supplier carries.

I do have some old transfer tape, in various sizes and they want to curl up from the backing paper, once applied.

Will add: clean your hands before weeding, skin oils and sweat can cause adhesion problems.

Cher.

I read the thread that Doug posted from "4 Edge Talk". Very interesting. Especially if you use Oracal (I don't use anything yet).

Well, I feel stupid. I thought I was talking about something current, not something from a year ago.

Gregory sells Oracal 651 (or whatever), and they seem to be a company very concerned about customer satisfaction, but I haven't used Oracal in awhile (cuz I have been out of biz for awhile). I did like it, but that was 7 or 8 years ago.

If no one gives you an answer, perhaps you could get a 10yd roll from your vinyl supply company for a test? You'd be out 30 US bucks, but that's the cost of research. (I was considering 3M or Avery myself, Gregory sells Oracal 651 ONLY in 50yd rolls, which I find strange).

Am I reading this right? there are different grades of application tape as well, low tac, mid tac, and High tac, we use the mid tac, it's good for just about any type of job.
