i would like something that you would get either
from letterville fonts, david butler or even golden
era studios. fonts could be ephemera or ballpark.
the sign would read

Hey since you guys are in the freebie spirit with all the cool design work, I wonder if anyone could send me a copy of their signmaking program, or maybe even some of your CDs with art on them?

While yer at it, I've also got a few signs that need designin', I'll send you the info and you can get around to 'em whenever you want, just so long as I can get 'em back this afternoon. That'd be great.

You will save me a bunch of cash, and I can take the credit for your effort!

Thanks a million!

John...Yer joking right????

BUT..I was just thinking/wondering if the grammar is correct on..."we have all the supplies you need
to blow anything up"??

Shouldn't it say "blow up anything"?

Awwww what the heck...it's all in how you phrase it I guess.

Anyway, John, You were joking...RIGHT? [Rolling On The Floor] [Rolling On The Floor] [Rolling On The Floor]

Edited to say...

Bruce, I LOVE your knitting skills!!! that knitted border looks just lovely. [Applause]

Doug... Your rendition is SO powerful that I refuse to even offer a humble alternative option!!! [Rolling On The Floor]

You all are so bad [Roll Eyes]

John, never mind them and the sarcasm.
Just realize we are not a free design service.
Hopefully we are all busy with our own requests for designs.

But once you to it yourself, and post it, and ask for input, YOU WILL GET IT
and it will be worthwhile and a learning experience.

I'm not sure I'd know how to design a sign for a dynamite demolision company with the clip art and font types you're suggesting.

You're right, Myra...but the others weren't entirely wrong.

And Jerry's reply was dead on. I'll do it for $65/hr too...unless you insist on using that clip art and fonts. That'll cost ya more.

hey, don't take it personal John, Like Myra said... if you do your own design first & ask for critique or suggestions, you could get an amazing amount of professional courtesy & expert advice from this site.

If you do nothing more then post a paragraph about what you wish for... well, I'm still not sure what you were really looking for. Bob at least asked if you were wanting to pay for sign work. For most, it read like you wanted a handout, so we had a little fun with it.

Go ahead & turn this post around if you like. Step up & give us your best shot at a layout using fonts or clipart you already own... or even snagging rastor images off the net to at least cobble together some sense of your vision & I think you can count on some serious contributions to better yourself & your design skills.

No sense leaving on a sour note about the sense of humor around here.. if we misunderstood you... clear it up! If you really did need to learn not to ask professionals to do your work free so you can sell it.. well, we all learn something here & now you can get with the program, meet some interesting folks & learn a whole bunch more [Smile]

John.
When I saw this topic yesterday I got all excited, because I do like to try out my alleged design abilities, just for fun.

But I must admit that I was turned off by what I read, and I didn't respond. It really looked like you were wanting something for nothing, whether that was your intention or not.

Imagine going to a restaurant with other Heads during a meet. You might only have money for an order of Nachos and a glass of water. But Si ordered Prime Rib, Karyn got a gooey dessert, and both of these look so good that you are tempted to ask for a taste.

I know both of these people, and they would let you have a bite and laugh with you. But if you just took their plates and started gobbling, they would be offended.

You came on here, wanting a bite of Letterhead Fonts and Golden Studios. I'm assuming that you have none of the aforementioned fonts or CDs. I could be wrong, but that's how it looked.

Next time, show us what you have already come up with on your own. Most of us enjoy a good play with an existing design. We all learn and benefit from it.

That being said, I did a small sign layout for you. I used my VectorArt CD that I got for $5 with the purchase of a SignGold starter kit, and my Atkinson alphabets I got with that $99 Fontry special last spring. I am by no means wealthy, and the Butler, Jackson, & Copelin CDs are on my wishlist too. Every year I buy myself 1 CD or font.
Love....Jill

Doug, we don't always agree, but I think your last post on this thread is one of your best. Well Said!

John, I meant no offense...think of it as initiation. If it makes you feel better, I did the same thing when I first showed up here 8 or 9 years ago...(well, okay, not the same thing)

Anywhoo I learned letterhead etiquette the hard way...right on the tip of my nose.

Learn from it, and roll on brother!

The way it works John is first submit any old crap for our perusal and then everyone will fall all over themselves to do what you initally wanted them to do. Just one level of hoops to jump through to get the results needed here.

Now, having said that, answer Bob Rochon's question, did you want it for free or fee? Anybody worth their salt in this business shouldn't need to make such a request. Critique maybe, but a flat out design is too much.

Not that you are first to do this, but I guess you ain't part of the brotherhood yet. You would have thought residency would have gotten you that.

Great layout, Jill!

Frank, Jill's layout should knock your customer's socks off! You should be able to just pull it off here and use it for a template. Or maybe Jill will send you an eps? You can wait until the next layout to learn how to do it yourself.

By the way, what's your favorite sign word?

Actually John e-mailed me and said thanks.
I don't care if he mocks something up from my "layout", which took me all of 30 minutes while I was waiting for a load of laundry.
I had fun doing it.
Still determined not to let Corel defeat me.

yeah... like school, if you do your homework & you still suck... people will help (they might even offer a sympathetic pat on the back of people who suck but can't help it)

if you ditch class, don't listen & avoid homework, you still suck, but one might think you CAN help it, so you may not get the proverbial pat on the back.

handing out fish is easier... teaching someone how to fish is more worth the time (at least to this hypocritical, egotistical, liberal) but offering fishing lessons to a poacher with one hand in your cooler... call me hypocritical, but I'm too busy for that.

...as for the amphibiously, analogically spaced out bunch around here, I'll throw that one back to source.

I wish John had answered my question in this post, I chatted with John via e-mail and he politely said he would pay if the price was right, not a bad answer, for we all would do the same. He wasn't looking for a free layout, it just became the assumption here as usual.

it seems that some of us can't wait for a target to pop up just to take a pop-shot at. And I'm not innocent on that either so I'm not judging at all here.

If I had the fonts I would have been more than willing to quote John a price for my time.

I guess when it happens to someone you don't know or even like, it just happens. But when it happens to a good friend, that I helped guide here, it's pure B/S!!!
John is full-time firefighter that is extremely talented and has spent his free-time away from the FD, to achieve a level of excellence w/a brush. His work has also been featured in at least two national magazines. He's obviously a resident member of letterville, and still those of you out there chose to tear off a chunk. Shame on you is only thing that comes to mind.

Those that chose to be decent, I'm sure he appreciated it, class always shines...

I have comments (what else is new [Roll Eyes] ) for both Bob & Frank...

Bob, I also wish John would have answered your question. I guess he has told you now, but untill then he told us "I would like something..."

...9 times out of 10, when we're not off on the frequent OT tangent, the "something" most of us like to get around here is guidance. Did we "assume" he wanted something free... not necessarily, but his replies started racking up in direct relation to how he worded his inquiry. I recognize that you are not putting yourself above the fray here, but when Frank, Joey & David (somewhat indirectly) appear to take pot-shots at letterville tendencies in general... whats the point? Is there some elusive "correct" way that anarchy should unfold?

Frank, I'm sure your good friend John is a talented firefighter & brush artist... but how can anyone expect a clear focused answer to a vague request???

What pure B/S "happened" to your friend anyway? My worst comments were about layouts that "suck", & were clearly a generalized reply to Joey, with no reference to John's talents. I just don't see that anyone should feel "shame" for kicking some (attempts at) humorous ideas around while waiting for John to make himself understood. Twice back in this thread & he still didn't state his intentions [I Don t Know]

Selling design work is the most difficult service to quote in my shop... even if you sit together looking at sketches, you can't really know what will work for the client & how long it will take. A bit of clear concise information up front is the only way to get a reply better then "$65/hour"

I wanna know how one steps outside to inhale a good deep breath of H2O. Sounds like drowning to me---unless the composition of air has changed lately.

"I need some help with this design." That brings back some memories.

For many years I have been attending Letterhead meets and hanging out with these guys and gals that call themselves Letterheads. They are a funny bunch by today's standards. Believe it or not, they actually share info and help improve each others skills at no charge.

I'm feeling really guilty right now. There were many times I would be stuck on a design idea and need help. Thankfully there were people like Bob Behounek, Ken Millar, Mike Stevens, Bruce Bowers and others more than willing to take time to explain what they knew about layout and design. I can never recall any of my mentors asking for payment. All they asked was that I pass the knowledge on.

I'm sorry for the response your question received John. Some may have assumed you just wanted a free design without being prepared to join in the process. Assumptions can often be wrong and we end up looking like arrogant, pompous asses.

I suggest we start from scratch and use these types of posts as learning experiences. Forget the software and font for now. What do you want the reader of this sign to feel? How big is it and how far away will the sign be from the reader? Please be more elaborate in your request.

As Letterheads, we are committed to helping each other learn to fish. Then you can feed yourself and teach others how to fish. It's a never ending cycle.

Now if you want to actually buy a fish ready for the table, there are all sorts of people here ready to help for a fee. Until we know for sure, we'll try resisting the urge to rip you to pieces.

Sorry Bill, my h20 comment was an attempt at self-depricating humor from another post...it was more for Doug Allans amusement. [Wink]

OK, here goes ... the other night when John posted this he sent me an e-mail in total disgust on what was happening in just the first 3 posts. I sent him an e-mail in return explaining how maybe he could have went about it and bafore he had a chance this thing just blew way out of hand. Yesterday I called him and he could not believe what had happened, Like he said maybe he worded it wrong but as it stood he was going to stay away for a long time! This really sucks because he is a "resident" here and if I remember right that cost him a few bucks. But John is that way he trys to do it right thing and doesn't want some thing for nothing, always wanting to help ( it must be the firefighter in him). As I told john yesterday I chose not to chime in in hopes that this would all go away and his reply was he wished it would also.. I met John in '98 at Mike Clines' brush rush and have hit it off real good and since became good friends with him.. He once rode his harley up from Alemeda on a chilly day (175 miles)in January to spend the day with me and watch as I did mini graphics and pinstriping on a ford truck, I know some people that won't travel across town to learn something.. and he did it such enthusiasum (sp) It made me believe he was and is a true artist! If any one has ever seen the Firefighter helmets he does would attest to that! Maybe he should have posted that he doesn't have a sign program at all, but them I'm sure he probably would have been slammed for that...Jill you are what we should all be on this board, Wonderful! and quite the sign artist (nice layout)! Sheila is running a close second... Thank you guys from a friend of a friend. John is one hell of a nice guy that didn't deserve this!!!!!
