It's been a while since I've done a project that needed a coat-out so I am looking for some input on paint. My project is a two panel MDO with the bottom panel having a changeable letter reader board. I am priming with water base Zinsser 1-2-3 Bulls Eye which I have had good success with in the past. I am looking for what would a good reliable top-coat. I prefer alkyd enamels (I have used water-based, but not cared for the soft/tacky surface. I understand that there are some water-based paints om the market that "harden" similar to alkyd but unfamiliar with them or who makes them). I'm not sure if any of my old favorites are still on the market, so any input as to a good choice of alkyd top coat? (Or water base that does not have the soft/tacky residual.)

Thanks for any suggestions [Smile]

Robert, I have been using Ronan® oil paints for several years with no problems. If it is just a background you are asking about, their bulletin enamel (two coats) will work fine. Their lettering enamels will also work.

I am old school and I use what works for me.

Ronan AquaCote dries to a hard, smooth finish. Waterbased. Most of the same colors as Ronan bulletin enamel. It works fine but I usually use Sherwin-Williams gloss acrylic enamel because I can buy it mixed in any color.

My preference is Richard's Excel acrylic latex DTM (Direct to Metal). Unlike Sherwin Williams and Ben Moore, it has a harder surface when dry so that you don't get a lot of fingerprints when you handle it. I prefer a satin or semi gloss finish, the sheen is nice. Although it says DTM we use it a lot on PVC and ACM, we never use MDO anymore as it rots too quickly in our climate. The Richards brand is considerably less cost than SW DTM.
