Dave, there are a few practical uses for iPads, so far as design is concerned.
1. There are several wonderful portfolio apps. 2. Pantone has some color swatch apps that making choosing colors and putting together color schemes a breeze. 3. Time managers for keeping track of hours spent on each project. 4. Several note taking apps that let you put photos, typing and handwritten notes together into a neat package. You can take photos of where a sign goes...along with arrows and labels..and put them right into the notes for that job. Maybe include a pic of an architectural detail you want to fit into the sign design.
There's more, but those off the top of my head. And then there's the impractical uses that are just fun to use. Games, facetime video chats, music, movie camera and editing.
For me, Pantone's myPantone app is the greatest thing since microwave popcorn!

PS. The procreate app used in Ricardo's post is a lot of fun. So far as the example of the photo realistic portrait, nobody is going to do that on an iPad unless they have the ability/skills/talent to do the same with brushes on canvas first. In other words, the artist did the portrait, not the app or the iPad.

Photo realism isn't a favorite of mine. That's why we have cameras. Main reason I don't read American Artist mag, too.. But I do appreciate the level of skill required.
