I have had problems with gold size and One Shot drying on leather, possibly due to how the leather was treated. I did do a unit insignia on an old bomber jacket years ago with One Shot and it worked fine. I believe those who airbrush on leather jackets use a water base acrylic, so maybe wunda-size would work. I did some pinstriping on a leather jacket with House of Kolor urethane striping paint which worked fine and dried quick.

Many years ago, I gilded a name on a leather bomber jacket with slow size and patent leaf and it worked amazingly well, although my experience may be the exception.

I use slow size and patent leaf when I goldleaf. I did refer the person to another sign shop.
Thank you.

Gilding on leather is most commonly done by book binders/restorers or by fine furniture makers/restorers. A shellac can be used for the size when gilding with leaf. We at W&B supply the genuine leaf for those that do a traditional type of gild on leather. It is also done by using a product called “Hot stamping foil”. You need a special heated tip tool to activate the adhesive and transfer the gold onto the leather. M. Swift and Sons used to make this product and now it can be acquired from Manetti of Italy. We can also special order the Manetti product.

Leather gilding is considered it’s own speciality do to the multiple types of leather and unique properties involved. There is far more to it than I know or can explain. You can still give it a try using oil or water based sizes and just have fun. Don’t stop yourself from being creative. You may be very happy with the results and certainly learn something along the way.

Frank Lehmann (Lehmann Bindery) of Vista, CA is an expert at gilding on leather and can be reached at 760-758-4142

Hope this information is helpful!
