Just got my new Sign Business mag and was going thru it when I came across a little piece in the Bulletin section.
Seems that Avery and Midsouth have decided to help out the shops that got hit by Katrina and Rita.......

BY sending them a palette of Avery vinyl!!!! Over 30 rolls!

These people just can't catch a break... [I Don t Know]

well now.. Avery has taken a beating for their shrinking vinyl.

But, I would like to make a point...
I didn't get a whole pallet of material. But I did get a few rolls of badley needed materials. I accepted the material.

I will use it and if it, I have confidence that it will not coem back as the magic shrinking plastic.
It would be one of the worst things that could happen to them. You can besure I will be the first to BIATCH loud and clear if there is a problem..

But, more importantly..

Avery was the ONLY company to offer anything to any of us whos lives were ruined or wiped out from Katrina.. Avery was the only company to even make some calls to see if we were even OK or if we needed anything..

I've bought a load of 3m material and never heard a word from 3M. Not a card not anything.

I've bought a load of app fluids, print media, inks, trans tapes. 1 Shot, Sudstrates etc. Not one even called to see I was planning on ordering anything soon. Not a percent off coupon, not a free sample, not a card, NOTHING...

I didn't see any company doing anything to lend a hand. No one. Not even a squeegee.

Therefor, I feel Avery should be at least receive a thank you trying to do something to lend a hand to some of who are completly wiped out.. In my opinion they should not have thier motives questioned under these conditions.

One more thing.. only one sign supply company called to see I needed a hand with anything. Sign supply USA in Pensacola offered a very generous hand for equipment if I needed it. PLus they also gave me a few extra weeks to pay off my invoice. They were very helpfull..

Of all the places I use to obtain supplies,, These two companies were the only one's I heard from or who showed ANY concern for the welfare of their end users.

This is all I can offer to this and I know most of us will not bash Avery for trying to do good. I certainly will not cheat them out of a blessing.

Just because they didn't brag about it in the trade mags doesn't mean they didn't contribute. Try googling "3M Foundation" and "Katrina Relief".

Before I saw Curtis's post, I saw this and figured hey... it's a heartfelt gift. I thought it was wonderfully generous, so I won't judge them. We got to move on and upward.
my 2 cents.

Although I never heard form Avery and i couldnt tell you who midsouth is, but curtis nailed it perfectly. If they wanna send a pallet of vinyl to people good for them and i would suspect like any vinyl you purchase theres a 99% chance its going to work fine. I've said it here before and i dont care who agrees with me or not,its almost all i used for 5 years or so and i never had a problem.....does that mean that they didnt have a problem and try to cover up the existence of the bad batch???? NO,but if any of you really think for one second that any major company doesnt do that its time in plain english to bend over and egress your head from somewhere How many times have you seen someone bitching about 1shot here?? Have they ever responded publicly? No they keep quiet about it instead of addressing it,knowing that the majority of attention span for things like this is extremely short, and email people off the boards....does anyone publicly and continously rail the crap outta them?? No. Why not??? If they were gonna send a pallet of paint to someone there would be more fawning over them than people do when dan posts about his router. There is no brand of vinyl, app tape, fluid, remover, glue, paint or substrate in the sign business that hasnt in the last 5 yrs suffered some kind of catastrophic failure and blown someones hard work apart and cost them money. Get the F over it cuz its gonna happen and theyre gonna tell half truths about it again as long as it meets their target failure per 1000 or whatever rate they determine is acceptable theyre gonna toss you a freebie to shut you up and go on about the day....this has not and will not change. Miraculously no one asks how many dummies in the sign business read about a potential problem with avery yet kept using it even when it was shrinking on the roll.....seem to recall more than a few here who used it and prayed it wouldnt blow up on em in the long run,so whose really at fault here in alot of cases??? Not the first material to fail and its a 100% certaintity it wont be the last so if youre not the one getting a pallet of it who really gives a damn. My email address hasnt changed.

Yes Jon, there were lots of people who help. There were a number of 'heads as well who gave most of whom didn't leave any kind or return contact.

However Jon, the context is of DIRECT help. I'm sure there were lots of companies who gave lots of resources.
But, it was Avery who made direct DIRECT contact. And, I am sure Avery is not finished with it either.

As best I know it wasn't Avery who (bragged) let the knowledge of their gift out to the public. To the best of my knowledge it was someone else. In fact, when asked,, the lady from Avery said Avery didn't want ANY recognition. She told me it was a hand up to those who's lives were ruined. And she didn't care who it was, or whether they used Avery products or not..

The gist of what was said is.. There is NO obligation to return anything connected with anyone receiveing some materials via Avery.

How does the saying go?.....

Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

When we had our troubles, Trim USA called us and gave us $2000 worth of materials to help get us back on our feet.

When we had an issue with some 3M Controltac that we bought from them recently, they offered to replace every bit that we had used and even sent a rep over offering to help replace the labor we lost. I turned the offer down because we were able to use the material on some other projects even though roughly 20ft of material got screwed up.

I don't know of too many companies willing to offer that kind of support and service. They did't do it so they brag and tell other how good they are. But, I'll certainly be happy to do it for them.
