Has anyone else received this official-looking notice in their email? Had me fooled, & just when I'm supposed to update my cc info. Now that's on hold until I'm sure it's ok.

We recently have determined that different computers have logged into your PayPal account, and multiple password failures were present before the login. One of our Customer Service employees has already tryed to telephonically reach you. As our employee did not manage to reach you, this email has been sent to your notice. Therefore your account has been temporary suspended. We need you to confirm your identity in order to regain full privileges of your account. If this is not completed by September 25, 2005, we reserve the right to terminate all privileges of your account indefinitly, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes. We thank you for your cooperation in this manner. To confirm your identity please follow the link below:
Sure wish I'd checked all the spelling errors first. At least I didn't (couldn't) respond to that email linkage, from within the email. I put the link in parenthesis so hopefully that disables it & nobody tries (or is that tryes) to use it. And when I emailed this to Paypal's Spoof address, I got the following.
----------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting PayPal. We appreciate you bringing this suspicious email to our attention.
Commonly referred to as phishing, these emails are sent by fraudsters in an attempt to collect sensitive personal or financial information from the recipients. PayPal takes phishing threats seriously. Our fraud prevention specialists are working 24/7 to help protect you and enable the community to stay safe.
After review, we can confirm that the email you received was not sent by PayPal. Any website which may be linked to this email is not authorized or used by PayPal.
Our fraud prevention team is working to disable any website linked to this email. In the meantime, please do not enter any information into this website. If you have already done so, you should immediately log into your PayPal account and change your password, as well as your security questions and answers. We also recommend that you contact your bank and credit card company immediately.
If you notice any unauthorized activity on your PayPal account, please report it to us by following the instructions below:
1. Log in to your account only from the PayPal website. Do not use links provided in any email.
2. Click on the Security Center link at the bottom of the page.
3. Click on the 'Unauthorized Transaction' link under the Report a Problem column.
4. Follow the instructions on this page in order to access the appropriate form.
Lastly, we recommend taking a few steps to protect yourself from identity theft:
> Download the SafetyBar, a toolbar for Outlook and Outlook Express, which identifies known spoof emails. > Get eBay Toolbar with Account Guard which warns you when you're on a potentially fraudulent (spoof) Web site. > Frequently monitor your account for suspicious activity.
Once again, thank you for reporting this suspicious email. Your vigilance helps us in our efforts to protect the PayPal community. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again.
Sincerely,
PayPal ______________________________

How sneaky can they be? (using supposedly secure -looking url addresses - https) And incidentally, this was received quite soon after I received the cc update notice. And the link is an actual Paypal address. I guess if you clicked on that link in the email, it would be like taking a hitch-hiker along with you into your Paypal acct. & all your private/secure info would now be theirs. (I guess I should be thankful that somehow Firefox disabled my ability to click on links within emails. Ever since then, I haven't been able to.) Just wanted you all to be aware of this scam, if you're not already. I hope no-one else got fooled. Gonna have to call Paypal to make sure everything is ok.

Ebay & paypal will both email you directing it to YOU not to "ebay customer" or some generic term. Never click on a link, go to your browser & go to their site through their home page. Anything real from ebay will be under 'messages' in "my ebay".
I got 1 last week to an address that has never had anything to do with ebay telling me that if I don't update my information by Feb something, 2003 my ebay account would be suspended. I hate when emails get delayed in cyberspace.

I get about ten a week. All scams, just forward them to spoof@paypal.com, or spoof@ebay.com and delete them.
They're scary at first, if you believe them, till you recognise them.
Often, if you hover your mouse over the reply link, it'll be worded innocuously, but the connecting link, visible in the lower left of the screen, reveals a totally different sub-url to the scammer's site. Just don't click on it!

well Bill... you probably know by now that the scam is not new by any means & wanring against that same type of email have been out there trying to warn folks for several years. I hope you didn't give up anything.
Glenn, I googled "phishing arrested" & skimmed through several of the first 15 pages... all about busts for email phishing. I guess there has been a lot of successful enforcement going on.
