I admit to being a "newbiee" Everyone is when they first start. I have asked questions in this forum and have had them answered too but recently some members have ignored my querys; either because I don't "do enough business" or, "I ain't worth the time". All too often it is the same faces saying the same things and now it's feeling that this is a soap box just for them. The question is: How did you start except by asking? You have talents and capabilitities far beyond mine so why shut me out because I do not know? do enough "business", or ain't worth the time because I don't make big bucks?

I'm sorry, you say something? C'mon that was funny....
If you are here long enough you will get in a flamewar, get a few nasty e-mails telling you too F-off and learn a whole bunch too. I myself have only met a couple of people, many have been here years and are very comfortable with thier relationships with a few people and others are very inviting, give it time. You will have a great time or stomp away in a fit....
Posted by Sonny Franks (Member # 588) on :
What is it you want to know? I haven't noticed any of your posts where you were "shut out". Often, because of the established relationships already developed here, it seems very hard to break in. Trust me, we've ALL felt that way and most of us haven't forgotten. Jump in , ask away, we're here to help each other (and don't kid yourself: very few of us are making the big bucks)

Welcome Your not being ignored..
I may be mistaken,, But you have only one post you initiated and it was answered by several pro's who really know thier stuff. There was no need for 20 others to post to it.. they gave u a perfect answer..
All your other postings are on some one else's thread. Its kind of hard to dance with you that way..

Hi - from another Kelly - they just think you are me.....
I can't figure out where this is coming from. Here is a neat liitle trick, click on the profile icon on one of your posts - it has a rollover that will tell you which one. Now click on "view recent posts" in the upper right. There doesn't seem to be any reason there for you to feel that way. Hang around for a while and you should feel more comfortable. BTW are you a M or F...just curious.

Best way not to be ignored here is to just toss that search button out the window and ask a question thats already been asked about 7500 times over a 6month stretch, just like youre an old regular here...either that or make a post askin for free clipart, software or fonts....any of those is sure to generate enuff traffic on a thread to where it looks like a tophat give away at the asshat factory. Post more

I would recommend you introduce yourself to the group. Give some details about what you do, your history in the business, and any other information that people might find helpful in getting to know you.
When you reply to someone else's post, sometimes people will respond to what you've said, but often they won't. It doesn't mean they don't like you, or that they are purposely ignoring you. To get more feedback on the forum, you need to initiate more posts of your own. You will get responses.
If you stick around long enough, you will start getting to know people on a more individual basis, which makes the whole experience more rewarding. There are some really really nice people here.

Kelly,
I find myself reading this post and realizing how much like a live meet this website can sometimes be.
At my first one, I felt a little intimidated by the talented group of folks I was begining to meet and was very absorbed by watching them work and listening in on discussions. I was nervous as all get out. Within a few hours, I'd found that I had many common experiences with other Letterheads, the initial jitters and feeling that I wasn't worthy to be there passed and the rest of the weekend was nothing short of wonderful.
As time has passed, I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the people here in Letterville. Several have become good friends. We do tend to throw about some inside jokes, personal jabs in the name of fun (like the current tagline jokes of late) and some off topic stuff, but whn a question does come up, you'll often find it gets responses in very little time.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers. Ask away. There's plenty of fun loving and passionate sign folks ready to help here.
and most importantly...
Welcome to Letterville! Rapid

....maybe it's your cologne? Nah, seriously, if I'd have noticed your question I would have replied.
So here goes: After I pounce, if there is a heavy buildup of graphite or chalk, I gently blow off the area with compressed air BEFORE painting. Sometimes I ever blow on it manually. Anthing to knock that chalk down. I know that it is harder to pounce with a machine-cut pattern, but try using a lighter touch. Also, I plot my pounce patterns in reverse, this seems to make them work better. Just flip & pounce.
I didn't mean to ignore ya. Honest. This place IS cliquish at the best of times, but we always try to welcome newbies...at least I do. Sometimes you might need to add "BUMP" to your own topic just to get it noticed. But PLEASE, no nekkid pix or mullet pix or Speedo pix, unless you look like Fabio.

Hi, Kelly! They are ALL right.
I was having a problem on how to back HDU last week & noticed Chuck's thread & I read it. then I had more questions, so I just asked on HIS thread. No answers. Then I realized I needed to post my OWN thread, & I did. I recieved some very helpful tips after doing that. Sometimes you will get answers by adding to someone else's thread, but it is better I think to post your own.
And yes, it is easy to feel "left out", I have felt that way before too, but I shove it aside & post anyway!
I have not been on here long either, & I have been to 1 meet, before I came on here & got to know people a little. I am planning on going to Jill's meet in a few weeks & boy, I am fighting a fear of meeting some of these people in person! Not to mention that my hand lettering skills need desperate help! But I going, I want to learn!!!
Don't give up, keep posting, before you know it, you won't be able to stay away from the board for more than a day!
Posted by Gene Golden (Member # 3934) on :
Hey Kelly, I just looked back at your post about the pounce. I believe you got all of the information that one would ever need to use a pounce!
One thing you may consider doing is to RETURN to the topic and let people know that you were satisfied with their answers - a little tip of the hat , or a "thanks for the help" kind of thing. That way, we konw you understood, or you can ask a more specific question for clarification.
It certainly didn't look like you were ignored at all.
Remember, it may not look like it, but we are all professionals who are also working, not just hanging out here online as a helpline. (Okay, maybe some of us are not always online.) I happen to look in several times a day. Some topics catch my eye - some don't.
When starting a topic, don't make it too cryptic. Some people start with: "What do you think?" How's this? My latest! Help!!!
They are not asking a specific enough question to get quality responses. Keep this in mind, and you may fare better.
Look at it this way, you just got a slew of responses here. It is a DIALOGUE. Talk back to us.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I appreciate it. I also apologize for "painting with too broad a brush" as it were. I suppose that a more precise stroke is nessesary. In truth, the following didn't not occur on the Bullboard but bringing them to the group seems the only way to get answers. 1. Panel jams are annouced and I wanted to know what the requirements are as to what the size of a panel is. I sent the e-mail to the one announcing it on this forum and to date it it still appears to have fell in to the Void. 2. I asked a couple other members about screenprinting and while one did respond another didn't but still acts like everybodies favorite uncle on the subject (you know who you are). The one who did respond sent a very nice, detailed response as to what they do but when I tried to place an order it too fell into the Void. 3. When I wanted to know just how a certain effect was achieved in a a posting I saw here that one actually got RUDE and told me that Kansas wasn't worth their time. As if California is the end-all be all of this World which is in itself a touchy subject to a man from Montana who experienced the effect of those folk who turned it into their playground and put too many good people out of work and out of their homes, like me. All of the above did not take place on the forum, rather they were private communications I attempted but the fact remains that if they had not been members and apparently exemplars of this fine and noble profession here I would not even have asked. For insults and put-downs all I have to do is look to that space on the other side of the counter but one this side of the "push" decal. I'll still come here, finding this forum was the second best thing I ever did, the first being taking a challenge to paint a sign all those years ago. To those I slapped with the broad brush I apologize, to those it covered with accuracy I say "If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it must be a duck." To Kelly: The last time I looked I got an "outie" if that makes difference. To Si: Fresh breath does not matter when you always smell like enamel and cargo pants will ALWAYS RULE especially when you don't have 8 hands to hold 12 things. Thanks again everyone, and a special "good buddy" (pick one) slap on the back or hug to those who took the time to guide me when I entered the dusty world of pouncing. For the record I bought an electro-pouncer and am quite happy with the tips I picked up here.

OK. It was a couple of your emails that were ignored?
If I send an email asking for some info and don't get an answer, I'll resend the email if it's something I really want to know. Some people get a lot of mails, and then there's also email filters that can sometimes "eat" them before they're delivered.
I had that happen with Kelly T. a few times before we found out that her email filter didn't like my "signature" attachment. All of my emails to her were being rerouted to her trash bin.
BTW, my problem is that I'm not ignored enough. LOL

Kelly,
Sounds like you haven't been fully initiated yet if the worst that happened was that your emails were ignored and you got one rude reply.
A post about any innocent topic will ultimately turn into the War of the Worlds....so you need to quickly develop the skin of a Walmart trampoline to repel the onslaught of rude replies and profanity laced emails that will surely come.
All in all there are enough people that are genuinely as *nice* and caring in private messages and emails as they appear to be on this board.
Just as it is in life, there will always be people that don't like you for a variety of illegitimate reasons.
I wouldn't worry too much about not making it into the "click". That's usually the sound you hear before the gun goes off. Posted by Steve Eisenreich (Member # 1444) on :
You do not hear the click of the bullet being fired. Bullets travel faster than the speed of sound.
Posted by Todd Gill (Member # 2569) on :
Clarification: Talking about the click of the hammer being engaged (cocking the trigger - and assuming a mental picture of the ol' west single action revolver - understanding that semi-auto's wouldn't adhere to this word-picture.)...not the hammer striking the firing pin. Thus - "Click, (followed by a squeeze of the trigger) and Bang." Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

I'm really not sure what you could have gleened from the post responses on this thread. The entire thread was started on a false premise. Bull**** in, bull**** out.
Not receiving prompt replies to every email does not constitute being ignored. There are plenty of reasons not to get replies, and all but one of them have nothing to do with the recipient.

I talked with Kelly on the phone tonight. Like many of you, I assumed he was someone from the past with a new name trying to stir up the neighborhood. I was wrong this time.
Kelly reminds me of myself in many ways. In other ways, he's not much different than some of you. He's got all sorts of art experience, but no clue about sign painting and the supplies we use. I can remember a time I thought a lettering quill had a feather. True story!
I'm not saying Kelly is a Saint. He's had his far share of knocks and admits he may have a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He's impatient and wants to know everything now. When challenged, he fires back with both barrels. He likes a few beers in the evening, and admits to going over the top sometimes. Drinking and typing never seems to end up well.
This is just my 2 cents, but I see a Letterhead in Kelly. He's passionate about our "thing" and eager to learn and explore his potential. That's good enough for me. I shudder to think what may have been had I not discovered Letterheads back in 1983. It's no coincidence that that is also the year I gave up my own serious drinking problem and began to believe that Steve Shortreed might be more than just a bum.
Someone on chat tonight said that once an asshole, you are always an asshole. If that's true, I thank God everyday that some early Letterheads were able to see past my faults and give this asshole a handup.
Just some food for thought.

Back home I was something but now I've been put in my place, far down the line of evolution, but Steve is right, I am impatient to learn now that I now how dumb I am. Again, to one and all, I apologize for my behavior (Think Sapphire's "Fess Up When you Mess Up"). For the record I truely enjoyed talking with Steve last night. He set me straight and also took the time to find out if I am who I say I am. I am always. I do not hide ever. I am loud and proud and often obnoxious. This Man is honored to be allowed here and on Chat last night after being so rude the night before. Sign me off to the tune of President's "Old Man on the Back Porch" (and if these metaphors caused you to go "huh?" just ask me for the mp3's) and "Peaches". Thank you friends.

Ahhh....
Kelly is a young'un (maybe?).. Video Killed the Radio Star is a 20+ year old song (1979) by The Buggles. It was the very first video MTV ever broadcasted in 1981.. back when they actually played music videos. Posted by Kelly Sawyer (Member # 5760) on :
You got me there Mike. Never know when you'll run across someone smarter than you but I am always looking (he holds the lantern high). Presidents did it better though.

I always admire someone who can digest their humble pie...but that only works if you can keep it down. Tread carefully & get to know us a little before you rise to the bait again. There are some who will find it difficult to clean the slate completely and it may take some time to regain their trust. If you are hot headed, my friend, they will eat you alive. This is a place of sharing and comraderie for the most part. There isn't much room for egos here, uneccesarily large ones tend to be deflated quite rapidly. Welcome to Letterville, may your time here be pleasant. Posted by Kelly Sawyer (Member # 5760) on :

I got the ego to paint and you do not want to challenge me. Anything you can do I'll do better and more "splendiforess". Like I said before and many times since, put your balls in my hand and we'll see who screams first, foremost, and loudly. Sorry for the poker face. Actually the only thing I am wondering at this point is how I show you folk what I do. "Bull**** talks but the artistry talks"

I'm probably in the majority wondering how in hell you'd think any of us would give a flying **** what you do. I, for one, have seen enough.

Messing w/Don is by far the dumbest thing you've done yet!!! Boy are you in for a surprise!!!! Yeah, go ahead, call out Don... Posted by Jane Diaz (Member # 595) on :
Some of the GREAT sign people that WE have meet over the years, like Gary Anderson, David Butler, and others that we ALL look up to in our industry are humble, kind, sharing individuals. I'm confused... You say:
quote: You have talents and capabilitities far beyond mine so why shut me out because I do not know? do enough "business", or ain't worth the time because I don't make big bucks?
What exactly DO you want from us? Obviously, friendship doesn't interest you?

So true! But Kelly Sawyer won't take any good advice that's given. So far I haven't seen Kelly post any of his work, and he hasn't asked any public questions. Kelly isn't interested in signs or art. He is interested in stirring up gorilla dust. What evidence is there to the contrary? Kelly reminds me of that pitbull full of porcupine quills. He just can't let it go.

Russ;
Gorilla dust?
Couldn't agree more Russ, but, I felt sorry for the pitbull, it's not his fault, he's a product of nature, Kelly's just a drunk.....

AS we said in Chat last night..
You posted a Full BLACK LIE in a post that used my name. I did not accept your apology because I know your kind. Your nothing but a unrepentant drunk. And more, several of us knew you would take advantage of Steve.. It was said by several of us you would take this posture....
Go ahead and call us out. Just don't come over here and act on it.. You will find yourself grabbing a hold of a tigers tail. This I guarantee is not a rant.
So, You are now on Ignore,, full time.
buh bye.. Troll...

Frank, I feel sorry for Kelly too, but he doesn't have sense enough to be helped. All he had to do was post an introduction, and then start asking normal questions and giving normal responses. He can't. He hasn't figured out that bluster and whine is a recipe for a very negative experience.

AMEN RUSS;
Heheh, we didn't exactly qualify for the Nobel when we first met, but it didn't lead to the nastiness of this situation. Over time we both have gained a mutual respect, void of any negative actions on either of our parts, it can and has been done... I suspect this fella's problems stem from fondness to the bottle, not so much lack of common sense. But that doesn't excuse bad behavior... You ever coming back into chat? lol

Frank, I keep wanting to get onto chat, but working nights has been an obstacle. After Friday I switch to a daytime schedule so the evenings will be more free. I'll be showing up on chat, and this time I'll try to mind my p's and q's. I did make it the other night for the kiya fireworks though. LOL.

Well that didn't go the way I hoped. I'm disappointed Kelly was unable to maintain his cool. At the end of the day we were back into personal attacks. That's not what this community is all about.
Your public posting days are over for awhile Kelly. If you are serious about wanting to learn, you'll have to address your questions to me via e-mail.
